Update to 4.9.43.p corrupts site

When I updated to 4.9.43.p I got a website Error 500 – unable to logon to wordpress admin site after then. To recover I disabled PlugIns, then progresively re-activated them again. Once I activate the EE4 Plugin the Error 500 occurs, then I have to go back through the de-activate/ re-activate process.

The EE4 plugin upgrade didn’t seem to function correctly as it ‘hung’ on the WordPress Maintenance in Progress – returning a several minutes screen.

I’m hoping you have some suggestions as I have valid data in my EE4 site already and don’t want to lose any. EE was working perfectly before the upgrade attempt. Can I roll back to the previous plugin edition??

Hoping for your assistance

Mark

Hi Mark,

Error 500 is usually a fatal error but if all you see is the error number then your server is set to not display error (which is correct on a production site), we need the full error to narrow down the cause. If you have cPanel or similar there should be a section to view the errors being thrown on your site, or there should be a error_log file or similar within the root directory of your site, however…

It sounds like the WP update function failed and you now don’t have all of the correct files for EE in the plugin directory so what you can do is is manually reinstall Event Espresso to confirm you have all of the files.

Go to Dashboard -> Plugins.

Find Event Espresso in the list, I’m assuming it is already de-activated.

Delete the Event Espresso plugin (no this does not remove your EE data such as events, registrations, payment etc they are all stored within the database)

Now go to your account page, download Event Espresso 4 again and install it on your site through:

Dashboard -> Plugins -> Add new -> Upload plugin.

Then re-activate that version, does it throw the error again?

Once I activate the EE4 Plugin the Error 500 occurs, then I have to go back through the de-activate/ re-activate process.

You should not need to de-activate all plugins, simply rename the directory of the plugin that is causing problem and reload the admin. That will de-activate the plugin you just renamed and you can then rename it back to the original directory name (that will not re-activate the plugin).

So if EE is causing the error you navigate to /wp-content/plugins/ find event-espresso-core-reg and rename it to something like event-espresso-core-reg-temp.

Reload the admin to de-activate the pluging and then rename it back to event-espresso-core-reg

I’m hoping you have some suggestions as I have valid data in my EE4 site already and don’t want to lose any. EE was working perfectly before the upgrade attempt. Can I roll back to the previous plugin edition??

As mentioned above, it sounds like the update call failed so you may not need to do this but which version was installed on the site prior to running the update?

Thanks Tony

The error_log reports:

[03-Jul-2017 10:27:28 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Class ‘EED_Event_Single’ not found in /home/adamanager/public_html/wp-content/plugins/event-espresso-core-reg/caffeinated/modules/event_single_caff/EED_Event_Single_Caff.module.php on line 24

This error appears 18 times, after which it must have timed out.

My site is using PHP 7.0, and has for a while – EE hasn’t had any previous issues so I’m wanting to check this hasn’t influenced the problem.

Can you offer more guidance as to a solution before I reinstall the PlugIn

thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,

So based on that error and the above info the above sounds correct, something has failed during the update and there are files missing from within Event Espresso which is causing fatal errors.

How did you update Event Espresso, via FTP or the plugin menu?

Right now the best course of action is to reinstall EE through the plugin menu to make sure you have all of the correct files.

Thanks Tony

I did the update via the WP PlugIn page, which I guess is always the easiest option.

To confirm:

I’ll delete the existing plug-in
Install the latest EE version
Activate

From there I should expect to see all existing data present?

regards

Mark

It’s much better than manually through FTP, but sometimes it can still go wrong.

To confirm:

That’s correct, however before doing so you could create a database backup (just to be safe), EE doesn’t remove details from the DB when you de-activate/delete the plugin but its always handy to have a backup.

There are a lot of different method to creating a database backup, one of the simplest is using a plugin such as:

https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/backupwordpress/

Or one of the many others: https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/search/backup/

From there I should expect to see all existing data present?

Correct.

Whilst I can’t say for sure as I don’t know what happened with the update, or why it failed, it is very likely that once you install a working copy of EE you’ll be back up and running as normal.
