Help me out, fellas. I’m not a web techie or an IT wannabe and most of this is over my head. I have EE v. 3.1.37.0.P and a notice to update to 4.4.1. The one click gives me an error message that I am only licensed for one site. Support tells me to apply for a new license. It also says to “migrate” to 4.4.1. It also says, in the sidebar that 3.1.37.0.P is not compatible with 4.4.1. Can someone simply tell me: do I migrate or update? And can you spell it out as in: step 1. do this, Step 2. push that, Step 3. calm down, etc.? |

Hi, It depends. If you are happy with EE3, then simply update to the latest (3.1.37.1). (I have reset your licence key to re-enable one click updates, you will get an email about it). If you wish to use EE4 you will need to : Back up your site including database! Please note that while we will continue to support EE3 for the next couple of years or so, eventually it will be fully replaced with EE4. |

Thank you, Dean. You seem to imply that there is a reason for me to stay with EE3. Is there a reason that I would not want to upgrade to the newer version? Now I’m really confused. |

Also, I went through the steps to reset the license key, copying and deleting the key, saving, then pasting the original key code back in. I still receive the same error message. |
Hi Stephen, We advise to review a comparison between EE3 and EE4 to make sure EE4 will meet your needs: https://eventespresso.com/differences-ee4-ee3/ It’s your choice whether to update to a newer version of EE3 or migrate to EE4. In either case though, if you continue to get an error message about your license key, you can request a free key reset (skip the checkout) and we’ll reset it for you. |

Okay. My confusion comes from previous experience with software, say Adobe. New versions don’t loose features, they add features in order to improve the usability. But what I’m hearing, and correct me if I’m wrong, migrating to EE4 may have no advantages and in fact I may loose features I have come to rely upon while gaining barcode and other features I have no use for. However, in a few years I will have no choice so perhaps I should just migrate now and get used to it? Or am I looking at this wrong? I will request a key reset as I am still unable to upgrade EE3. If you hear a scream you’ll know I couldn’t figure out how to “skip the checkout,” though I assume it will be self-explanatory. |
Hi Stephen,
EE4 is not simply an update to EE3, it is a completely new system built from the ground up. To explain a little more EE3 users were requesting more and more advanced features that EE3 was not originally designed to do. We noticed the more features added onto EE3, the most obstacles with the current setup we would find, so it become clear that a change in structure was needed, eventually this become EE4.
There are advantages to using EE4 over EE3, for example events are custom post types (meaning they integrate more closely with WordPress and other plugins) we still use custom tables but the core event is a Custom Post Type. The ticket selector allowing much more complex ticketing setups. An important change is the ability to purchase multiple ticket types using a single set of registration information. The barcode scanning is a separate add-on which if you have no need for you do not need to purchase. Which are the features you are replying upon with EE3 that you will lose with EE4?
EE3 has had many more years of development than EE4, eventually we would like for EE4 to accommodate for all uses cases that EE3 currently does but this will take some time. If EE3 suits your needs right now and EE4 does not, then there is no need to migrate to EE4, just continue to use EE3. If some time in the future EE4 supports all of your needs (and possibly newer feature you don’t use currently) then migrate over and use that. The choice is yours which is why EE3 license holders have access to both EE3 and EE4, so when your ready to make the switch you can do just that. **Note As EE4 is a vastly different system to EE3 it is recommend to migrate on a development copy of your site first, ensure all of the features you expect to work, do so, then migrate the live site. Does that help? |

That helps tremendously, thank you. I currently have an event running and don’t want to take the chance of loosing anything. I will wait until the event is over, later this year, then migrate to EE4. Before your explanation I was feeling pressured to do so now. |
I am sorry for the confusion.
I think that’s a great decision. Sometimes users need to migrate during open registrations but if EE3 suits your needs right now stick with it until you are ready 🙂 Can I ask what was making you feel you must update right away? If it was part of our documentation I’d like to add some clarification so other users don’t feel the same. |
