Yesterday I created an event as usual which includes a custom Automated Upcoming Event Notifications as well as an automated reminder. After creation I sent a test e-mail to my home address as usual but it did not go thru. Instead I got a fatal error. This morning I got this in an e-mail from WordPress:

We have been using this module for a number of years and have never had a problem before. In addition, this morning I registered for the event. I did receive the “Event Registration Details” approval e-mail, however, when I checked the Message Activity activity page it said that the Registration Approval message “To:” = “No recipient” and if I hover over the To field it says “Queued for Generating”.
I can reproduce the issue with sending a test emails for messages and have opened a ticket for our developers to investigate the above.

This is a little strange.
You said you received the “Event Registration Details” approval e-mail, but then say the Registration Approval message is still sitting waiting to generate, in which case that can’t be the message you received as it hasn’t generated.
Are you 100% sure you are looking at the message in question within the activity log?
I agree it is strange. However, if you give me an e-mail address, I can forward a screen shot showing that the “To” = “No recipient” and Modified = 2023-05-18 09:57:24 and I can forward you my received registration approval e-mail at Thu May 18 2023 10:01 am.
OK, never mind, I guess I was a little hasty, the message board now reads Sent To PeaceManK@verizon.net at and Modified = 2023-05-18 10:01:57. Seems like my timing was perfect to give me a false impression.
I’m experiencing the same issue. I ran a test registration last week and received the registration approved email as the recipient but can’t recall if I received the admin email. But today I received a new registration and never received the admin email. I checked messages and the registrants email shows green so I can only assume it was sent but the admin email is orange. When I tried to send a test email, I received a critical error and the WP email referenced this error.

I get this error also when trying to send a test message through the custom message template. When I setup a new custom message template an click on preview I get also the error.

We found the cause of this and fixed it in version 5.0.7.p which has now been pushed live.
If you don’t see the update available o your site yet just go to Event Espresso -> General Settings. Make no changes and just hit save to force an update check.
The update should then show in Dashboard -> Plugins as usual.
