Hi EventEspresso Support Team,

I have the issue, that when the attendee presses the resend notification email he gets the notification email multiple times. As example, I press it once, I get 48 emails
We updated to the latest version of EE, hoping it would fix the bug. I also noticed in the message activity panel, that the recipient is missing.

Can you please help me fix that issue?

Thanks a lot and best regards,

Pascal

Just a short addition:
the addon of wp-user integration is sending the multiple message on trigger from my event page in front end.

I can provide a user and url to test, but not in the public forum.

Thanks and best regards!

Hi there,

You can fix the missing recipient address by going into the Event Espresso > > Messages > Message Templates editor and make sure that the emails that have something in their To: field have valid shortcodes that parse to email addresses in those email fields. In most cases, any email that you send to a registrant should have the
[RECIPIENT_EMAIL] shortcode, and if it’s an admin email, the to field should have either
[EVENT_AUTHOR_EMAIL] or [CO_EMAIL].

Hi Josh,
Thanks! I will add that. Will this also solve the multiple mail issue?

Was there another issue that you thought this would solve?

Hi Josh,
I still need to solve the multiple sending of the notification emails. Any idea, how to solve that?
Cheers!

I already posted a solution to that:

Hi Josh,
I added everywhere the [EVENT_AUTHOR_EMAIL] to the emails and checked, that the primary attendee emails always have the [PRIMARY_REGISTRANT_EMAIL] and the other attendees the [RECIPIENT_EMAIL] short code in the email TO field. I still get very many emails, when I use the resend email notification button of the wp-user integration. The message “Messages have been successfully queued for generation and sending” is being showed 22 times, not only once. Also I noticed, that despite using the correct short codes for the primary attendee and the other recipients, the primary attendee get’s the attendee email and the primary attendee email.
Might this be an issue of the EE update? I can provide you with access credentials, if that helps, but can’t post it here into the forum.
Thanks a lot for helping me solving that issue.

Hi Pascal,

Who is your web host (hosting provider)?

I’ve seen this issue occur from caching services. Have any caching services (e.g. WP super cache) been added to the website recently?

Lorenzo

Hi Lorenzo,

On the dev system the cache is disabled, on production system it’s enabled. I get the error on both servers. The provider is a small hosting provider in my country.
So caching can’t be the issue. Thanks for your help.

Also I noticed, that despite using the correct short codes for the primary attendee and the other recipients, the primary attendee get’s the attendee email and the primary attendee email.

That’s actually expected because the primary attendee is still an attendee and should get both a primary attendee email and a regular attendee email.

With regards to the extra emails getting sent out, can you check your server’s PHP logs for sendmail related errors at the times these emails were generated and sent?

Hi Josh,
I checked the logs, but can’t find anything. Is there a debug mode, where the email sending process can be seen? I also get many messages, that the email is being queued (approx. 22 times under each other), when I press the “resend registration confirmation email” button.
If it helps, I can give you access to the server to debug. I will try SendGrid and will let you know.

Hi Josh,
Here’s an image of the messages Message sent I hope that helps.
Cheers!

Hi Josh,
I installed SendGrid and used it for a test. There are 40 (!) requests, then I get 6 x the same message and 2 x the admin notification message. I only have resend the resend registration confirmation button once for one user.
So there must be something with EE sending out too many emails. Thanks for helping me resolving this issue.

So when you get 6 of the same message, does that message show as sent 6 x in the Messages Activity table or does it show 1 time there?

ps

Hi Josh,
In the mean time I received a total of 30 messages with the registration confirmation and 10 admin notifications (I’m also the event admin). In the message activity tab there are 40 times the messages at the same date and time, so really triggers 40 emails.

That doesn’t really answer my question. So when you look at those 40 messages in the Message Activity table that all were sent at the same date and time, are they the same message to the same email address, or were they sent each to a unique email address?

Also, do they have an email address in the From column?

ps

September 26, 2016 at 4:23 pm

Hi Josh,
There are different email addresses, but only two of them. It’s the same message to one email address (primary attendee and recipient) and an other message to the event admin to an other email address.

In the FROM column, I don’t see any email address, only the company name.

I hope this helps, if you want to have a look at it yourself, I can post the credentials on a private manner. Please let me know. Perhaps it’s easier for you to see it, instead of asking the questions and me trying to answer them.

To clarify, it’s always the registration confirmation message, that is being sent. Just in the different contexts, such as primary attendee, recipient and event admin.

In the FROM column, I don’t see any email address, only the company name.

That’s causing the problem. What happens is, an email can and will send if there’s an address in the To field. However if there isn’t an email address in the from field, no confirmation of being received can be made, so some email servers will resend again, and again.

So your fix is simple. You need to get an email address included in the From field. You can either place one directly in the message templates From field, or put the [CO_EMAIL] Shortcode there. Then, you go to EE > General Settings > Primary Contact email and verify there is a valid email address in that field.

ps

September 27, 2016 at 1:02 pm

Hi Josh,
I verified those settings and there is an email address entered in the EE > General Settings > Primary Contact. I also checked the from field in the registration confirmation message of every user user context and all have the [CO_FORMATTED_EMAIL] in the FROM tag. I still get 10 x the notification emails (event admin) and 18 x the registration confirmation email, when I press the resend registration confirmation email button in My Events.

Can you try updating to the very latest version of the WP User integration add-on? There’s some code included in that version that should stop any additional message processing from that My Events page.
