The error you are getting currently is different from the error you had previously.
Error 500 is a server-side error and usually happens when there’s a PHP error being thrown which should show up in the logs.
Your previous issue was from something on the server adding additional text to the response, which then meant the function parsing the return couldn’t understand it.
“This registration step could not be completed. Please refresh the page” is a catch-all error shown when EE doesn’t have a ‘valid’ error to display for you so it looks like a similar issue but is actually something different.
Does your host have a section you can use in your control panel to view the server’s error logs, mainly PHP errors?
