When folks sign up they have to fill out their address. WHen they go to the drop down box of states, there are over 100 options. All sorts of odd spellings for states, 2 letter versions, 3 letter versions, its crazy.

At the end of the list there are states listed under US, then states listed under U.S.A, then more states listed under USA, more listed under United States etc.

Is there a way where they can just have a normal drop down of the 50 states like I’ve seen every time I’ve filled out my address online?

This question is listed as a “system question” so it seems like I can’t edit it.

Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Ted,

Did you migrate from EE3 to EE4?

The state question pulls the values from the country options.

If you go to Event Espresso -> General Settings -> Countries

Select the country in question in the dropdown and EE will pull all of the settings/states for that country.

Each state has a ‘State Appears in Dropdown Select Lists’ option, you’ll need to set that to No for the states that you don’t want to show.

I’m using EE4. If I go to EE – general settings coountries it’s set to united states.

The issue is when a student selects a list of states from the drop-down there are over 150 options for states. Most of them are misspelled and make no sense.

The first option for states under united states is 123.

Second option is Alabama, third option is lower case version, alabama.

The fourth option under states is Alegeria|Algeirs|Ouled,Djella,Skidea.

I know and that’s the section you need to update.

The issue is when a student selects a list of states from the drop-down there are over 150 options for states. Most of them are misspelled and make no sense.

Did you migrate from EE3?

When you migrate from EE3 the migration step uses whatever has been added to your EE3 database and pulls them over into EE3. If you have random, misspelt states in your EE3 database they will have been pulled over.

Or, users have added them to your EE4 install using the ‘Add a state’ feature.

The first option for states under united states is 123.

Second option is Alabama, third option is lower case version, alabama.

The fourth option under states is Alegeria|Algeirs|Ouled,Djella,Skidea.

Right, so when you go to General Settings -> Countries.

Do you see those ‘states’ mentioned above listed in states?

Here – https://monosnap.com/file/vv7OXBq4zlzgAANa83Rlqng1YI7SUK

That section shows all of the states related to the country you selected on that page, if the state is there and set to display, it shows in the state dropdown you are referring to.

I found the list of all the states under United States.

I have set all the bad ones to not be shown on the drop-down list.

So now on the drop down it shows united states and all 50 states. Much better!

Then it show all sorts of variations of spelling of united states, like USA and then there are all sorts of varations of spelling of states, FL, then Florida, then FLORIDA. Then there is another varatioon on United States, like U.S.A and more varations of states. Over and over.

How do I make it so there is just a single list of 50 states and that is the only option.

Secondly once I accomplish that how do I have students with another country besides USA sign up?

Thanks for all your help so far.

That means you have additional ‘Countries’ with their own states.

Check the dropdown for those additional countries and disable them. Similar to the above, select the country in the dropdown and wait for the settings to load then set the ‘Country Appears in Dropdown Select Lists’ to No and save. That will also disable any states associated with that country.

Secondly once I accomplish that how do I have students with another country besides USA sign up?

Basically the reverse of the above.

Select the country you want to enable and set ‘Country Appears in Dropdown Select Lists’ to yes.
