I used the following work around that I found in the forums:

1) Went to Questions and created a “bogus” question as follows – “Is water wet?”
For Type, I used a Checkbox. I entered the word “Yes” in the Answer Options. I picked Yes for Required. I entered the word “blank” for Required Text. Then (a most important step) I picked Yes for Admin View Only.
2) Went to Question Groups and created a new Group Name called “No Promo Needed”. In the Description field I entered “If you are logged in as a member, you don’t need a promo code.” Then (a most important step) I clicked on both checkboxes – Show Group Name on Registration Page, and Show Group Description on Registration Page. Lastly, I chose only the “bogus” question to include in this Question Group.

When I did this, I had a test registration in progress. I reloaded the page and the text popped up for a second that I wanted, BUT THEN IT DISAPPEARED as if the page reloaded on it’s own and now the text will not show up.
It’s very frustrating that I just paid $99 for a plug in that won’t allow me to make the most basic of adjustments (adding text so customers know that is the box to enter the code because this is NOT obvious with the plug in alone).
Can anyone please help? I am not familiar or comfortable with any coding – but something this basic and necessary should need that.
My apologies, but I’m not sure what the above workaround is intended to do as it doesn’t seem related to the problem you have.
May I ask why you have added the custom question and empty group?
An admin only question is only visible within the admin so doesn’t sound like it would apply to your issue and an empty question group can be used to add additional text to the registration form, but the promotion code field shows on the Payment Options step (after the section that shows the registration forms questions).
Or are you also collecting the promo code as a custom question on the registration from?
