I have created a subdirectory of my primary site (https://7foxtrot.comhttps://7foxtrot.com/trainingcomplex) and I want to install EE4 on the subdirectory and eventually move it to the primary. I want to test everything out as I set up the new site. How do I do that and have everything run correctly on both sites? The subdirectory will only be used for evaluation until I migrate it to the primary site.

Hi Erick,

This isn’t really a viable option unless you’re well-prepared to merge the database from the subdirectory site into the primary website and resolve all of the conflicts that will happen. Tools to handle this type of scenario have come and gone (notably this one), so it will be a manual process.

So in short, you could evaluate EE on a sub directory, but migrating any data from that sub directory isn’t advised. If you do decide to install EE on a subdirectory, you’ll follow this guide first:
https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-install-wordpress-in-a-subdirectory-step-by-step/
Then after you’ve installed WordPress in a subdirectory, you’ll install Event Espresso there.

I have already installed WP on that subdirectory and EE but the key isn’t working to get the update. Do I deactivate the one under https://7foxtrot.com and then activate https://7foxtrot.com/trainingcomplex? As far as the EE database goes, I was going to replace it not merge it. I may be a little in over my head on that an my just redirect to the new one.

You can use the key on one of the two sites and one time, updates cannot be served to both sites with one key.

So while you have both sites going, one site can use the key, and the other site can be manually updated. This means remove the plugin, upload the current version zip file on the WP > Plugins page. You can download the current version from your account page.

As far as the EE database goes, I was going to replace it not merge it.

Please bear in mind that it’s not an EE database, it’s the entire WP database as Event Espresso writes its custom post types into the wp_posts table. So this will only work if both sites are identical when you get started, and the original site doesn’t change while you work on the subdirectory site.

They are not going to be identical. New theme, new layout, trying to use same page names and wording. Adding new pages though. I have a good listing with search engines currently so I may just have it redirect to new page. Thanks for the help.

OK. A simpler approach you could take, to avoid having to do redirects, is use the “Maintenance Mode” feature. This disables Event Espresso frontend functionality for all site visitors that are not administrators, and allows you to configure and/or test things on the frontend of your website before others can see.

You can activate Maintenance Mode by going to Event Espresso > Maintenance Mode, then update the setting there.
