Just bought Events Espresso and really getting into it now. About to test my final part – payments.

Using Stripe, in Payment Settings it states: “Stripe Currency Symbol – Stripe uses 3-character ISO-4217 codes for specifying currencies in fields and variables. If you are taking purchases in US Dollars, enter usd here. Stripe currently only takes payment in USD, but can accept payments from any currency which will be converted to USD at checkout.”

I am using Stripe UK, do I change USD to GBP in the settings, ignoring the above info, and all will be well? Or will some sort of USD conversion take place when users checkout?

Hi Janet,

I’ve just setup a Stripe UK account (as I’m in the UK) and ran a couple of test registrations, which worked fine.

So yes just ignore the message and use GBP. (There’s now a ticket to update the message for future versions of Event Espresso)

When you setup your stripe account you’ll automatically be assigned 2 sets of API keys. One of Testing and one for Live. So if you go to Stripe -> Your Account -> Account Settings -> API Keys and use the ones for Testing you’ll be able to run some test Payments using GBP just to make sure all is well 🙂

Here’s the stripe documentation for test cards you can use https://stripe.com/docs/testing#cards

Thanks Tony, that’s a great help. I set it up and the test transaction went through OK.

Probably an obvious question and I can’t recall as I originally looked at Stripe way back and have only just returned to it. On live pages, does my website need to have an SSL certificate or is the security part handled by the EE/Stripe functionality? I’m a bit confused on that side of things.

Hi Janet,

As a general rule of thumb, On-site gateways (gateways in which the user does not leave your site and inputs their card details from within your site) should have SSL certificates.

Off-site gateways (in which the user is sent to the providers site to input card details) often do not require SSL (although some do)

It is recommended by most, but iirc it is required by Stripe that your server has a valid SSL certificate in order for the gateway to work. (Test payments do not need SSL)
