Hi,

Just received notifications that support for Stripe Modal Checkout in WooCommerce is coming to an end.

Will there be any issues with the Event Espresso Stripe plugin and the Modal Checkout it is currently using?

Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve,

No issues. Going forward, the Event Espresso Stripe will be doing something similar where it will get an update so it can use the newer Stripe Payment Intents (similar to what WooCommerce is doing). The reason for this change is because Stripe is replacing the modal checkout with what it calls its New Checkout. The New Checkout (and other newer Stripe payment methods) all support 3d Secure. The Stripe Modal checkout does not support 3d secure and that’s an issue because in some places that is going to become a requirement.

Hi Steve,

In short, Stripe Modal Checkout is being deprecated by Stripe themselves and the reason for this is down to the the EU Payments Services Directive (PSD2) which in effect requires payments to use 3D Secure to comply.

It’s not possible with the modal checkout to do that so Stripe checkout will now direct you to Stripe to make the payment, then back again, if 3D secure is required for your payment (pretty much every time) Stripe handle that on their side.

The EE Stripe payment method will likely follow suit and use the new checkout, simply because it must do so to be compliant with the above. The directive isn’t only required by site owners in the EU, but if your site serves EU visitors and they register onto an event and pay with Stripe, it needs to comply, so either way, we’ll be forced to switch.

The current checkout (which Stripe now call the legacy version) will continue to function as-is for the time being, the date in which 3d Secure must be implemented is 14th Sept 2019 so we’ll need to have switched over by that date.
