Hi there,

I have a staging site where I test updates before pushing them live, but am having issues with the license checker. I know staging.website.com should be clear of any issues, but ours is currently staging5.website.com. Is there any way to be able to push one click updates without having to delete and manually upload? (We have a lot of events/users/etc. we use to test from the live site and I don’t know if those would get deleted by doing that?)

Just realized from reading another forum post that you can now upload a plug in after downloading and it gives you the option to replace! Disregard (unless there is a way to get a support license for this domain) thanks!

Hi Jason,

Currently you cant get that other staging domain to wok as is, but I’ve created a ticket to see if we can do so in the future.

The manual update you mentioned above is fine but I also wanted to address this:

(We have a lot of events/users/etc. we use to test from the live site and I don’t know if those would get deleted by doing that?)

Event Espresso stores all of your data within the database, nothing is stored within the plugin files, which means that when updating you should not lose any data at all. We do recommend creating a database backup before pushing updates just to be safe, but deleting and installing Event Espresso does not erase any of its data.

However, WordPress does show a notice on how deleting the plugin may delete its data when you do and whilst technically that is true it is actually up to the plugin itself what happens. When you delete a plugin from WordPress it will call a function on a specific hook which allows the author to do whatever they think they need to do. But there are indeed valid reasons to simply delete a plugin from a site and without wiping the data, so we do nothing but have an option to nuke the data separately if needed 🙂
