Form & Function

August 31, 2015 at 7:37 am

Hi there

I’ve noticed that the search registrations function is inconsistent and unreliable in te results it returns. For example, if there is a registration record for someone called ‘Robert Peck’, and you search for ‘Robert Peck’, it returns no results. If you search for ‘peck’ it returns the record for Robert Peck. In another instance a registration for ‘Sara Higgens’ isn’t returned at all using the search terms’ Sara Higgens’ or ‘Higgens’ but the term ‘Sara’ does return results (along with registrants called ‘Sarah’). The event espresso system is going to be used by the customer services desk at an international conference where staff need to be able to quickly locate registrants on the system. I’m putting together some documentation on how to use it and undertake various tasks – the search function is so unreliable it’s a bit embarrassing and I can’t explain to the client why it behaves like this – any ideas?

Thanks in advance
Laura

Hi Laura,

I sent a note over to the dev team that stresses the importance of being able to return some search results that matches the search query. From what I understand there’s a challenge to get results that match two values from two different columns in the database (ie, the First Name, and the Last Name values are stored in their own columns) and the present search function can only search through one column at a time.

In the meantime, you can explain to them that the search function will query through the records one column at a time.

Hi Josh

Thanks for the explanation, I’ll include that in my notes to the client. Still a bit odd that in the example I gave the term ‘Higgens’ (which is a value in the Last Name column) did not return the result expected.

It would be great if the search functionality could be improved as it’s an important function for customer services desks at events.

Many thanks
Laura

Hi Josh

Just another note to say when I searched for the Last Name term ‘Grant’, the results returned 2 records for ‘Grant’ plus 4 other records that don’t have ‘Grant’ or anything remotely similar in first or last name. Bit confusing for client!

Thanks
Laura

Hi Laura,

Thanks for the additional info, it’s invaluable. I’ll update our internal ticket with it.

Hi Josh

Glad the feedback is of use – EE is a brilliant system overall, there’s just a few glitchy things that we’ve ran into problems with that have caused a bit of undue stress and confusion with the client.

Keep up the great work!
Thanks
Laura

Hi Laura,

One thing to keep in mind is the Search isn’t limited to the First and Last name fields. So for example if an email address from a registration contains the characters “grant” it will return those registrations as well. You’ll also note that this allows for searching by registration ID. I think you’ll find this useful in cases where you don’t have a name, but you do have the email address or ID or other piece of information.

Update: Event Espresso 4.8.10.p includes a change so that it includes the Attendee full name field in search queries.
