Is there a way to make an event required. I know about the option to make a ticket required, but what I have is several events that make up a conference. The main event is the conference itself, the other events are workshops which are optional. Visitors must register for the main event in order to participate in any of the workshops, which are free admission events. I need several tickets for the main event to offer different pricing shemes (group tickets, member tickets, etc.).

Hi there,
We don’t currently have an option for this within EE, it would be possible to do but would require some custom coding from a developer. If you are not currently working with a developer you could try one of the ones listed here:

Another option (which would still require custom coding) have the users register and log into the site before registering onto the main event, then hook in an set a custom capability on the user when they purchase a ticket for that specific event.
You could then use the WP user Integration add-on and set a capability requirement on all of the ‘workshop’ tickets so only users that have that capability can purchase them.
