I’m looking for somewhere to post this… hope this works –

I’m getting tons of spam – is there a way to limit spam (captcha) or something similar?

thanks

Hello Gabriel,

I moved this to its own thread as it was not relevant to the one you wrote on. It is always best to start a new forum thread/post if at all possible unless you issue exactly matches the original posters issue.

In regards to the spam, you can set up reCAPTCHA for the event registration forms. You will need a reCAPTCHA api key available free from here http://www.google.com/recaptcha and reCAPTHCA can be turned on via the option in the Event Espresso General Settings.

It will only limit automated spam, human spammers can of course bypass recaptha and there isnt much that can be done about it.

Thanks Dean – I couldn’t find the way to start a new thread.

I already had captcha installed – I think it is because google’s captcha was hacked- I've read tons of other reports of people getting spammed through captcha... I wonder if there should be some other auto-bot destroying implementation?

Thanks

Hi,

Ive not heard anything of reCAPTCHA being hacked since an unsuccessful attempt a year ago.

Perhaps create a new API key over at reCAPTHCA and see if that helps.

I can put in a feature request for alternative spam blockers but I cannot guarantee if or when it would get looked at.

I am getting a ton of bogus registrations (spam) as well.  I initially thought I could just track the IPs that were submitting the bogus registrations and block them, but they are different almost every time.  (on a side note, I noticed that bogus login attempts for admin have started coming from random IP addresses instead of specific ones – I guess hackers are moving to cloud/proxy services).

I also have CAPTCHA enabled, but it’s still letting some through (but not all).  I would also like to request an alternate CAPTCHA method, or the ability to have two different CAPTCHA methods enabled at one time.

@dgreen,

Do you know of any good alternatives to re-captcha that you’d like to see?
