I’m using Event Espresso for event registration where the event is a series that takes place monday wednesday and friday for two months. It seems to work fine in one sense, but it makes an entry for EVERY day so it looks like the user can register for them individually. You can only register once for the series. How can I make it so when it lists as an event that it doesn’t make a page full of entries? Its fine to list them all on the calendar, but I don’t want 24 listings on my events page for this one event. I only want one that allows the user to register for the series, because they can’t register once its started.

I guess to make this simpler, my question could be distilled down to this: How do I make it so a multi-session class will display ONLY the first session on a page? Currently I use categories on a page to display classes. So for example, anything with “ceramics” as a category will show up. SO if there are two ceramics classes, that are multi-session, I end up with like 20 listings where I should only have two. Here is an example: http://www.mountainartcenter.net/adults/ceramics/

Hi Alan,

Currently the site is in maintenance mode (well, password protected at least) so we can’t view the posts currently.

Without modifying templates or building custom shortcodes the easiest option is to create another category and include only the first instance of those events (events can have multiple categories) in that category, then use that to display those events.

You could also use the [SINGLE_EVENT] shortcode for the first events, however using the categories is a little more flexible/easier to manage.

Whoops, I forgot to turn that password thing off. I turned it off now.

I tried the single entry short code idea, but then it looks like there is only one class. For example here: http://www.mountainartcenter.net/adults/drawing/ “Life Drawing” is every Tuesday throughout the year. And its a drop in, with no registration. But using single entry, it looks like there is only one class (Feb 25). So, as I understand it, using this method, I would have to go in and change that single entry short code every week?

In one sense, I seem to be able to get the multi-session classes to display as one entry except there is no description. (see: http://www.mountainartcenter.net/art-school-san-lorenzo-elementary/ ) If the user clicks “register now” then they can see the individual class dates, and then one more click and they can see the descriptions, which is too many clicks. I’d at least need a short description to show up on page one.

Ideally, I would an admin to be able to enter a multi-session class, where the customer must pay once up front for all classes, and have that class description display automatically on the proper page, as one listing with a link to the sign up form.

I feel like somehow this can be accomplished with short codes, but it’s not making sense to me. I’ve read the docs on the short codes and I still can’t figure it out. I thought maybe it could be accomplished with the posting option, but EE makes a post for EVERY instance of a securing class, which ends up monoplizing any automatic posting display box.

Can you maybe give me a sample short code to try or point me in the right direction so I can figure this out?

Thanks so much for you help.

Hi Alan,

The recurring events manager was developed in mind for events like movie showings, plays, and other events that run for a period of dates where people have a an opportunity to buy tickets for a specific showing.
Some have used this feature as you’ve described above to display a course, but it takes a few more steps to set up:
First, you set up the recurring event with all the applicable dates. Then you copy the full url of the first event:

Second, you paste the Full URL of the first event into the “Use alternate registration page?” field and set the events to not display a registration form:

Then update(save) the events.

Third, you edit the event instance that people will be registering for, making sure to apply changes to that one only by selecting “only this instance”:

Then to make it so only one event is listed on the event list you could make the modifications outlined in this thread:

https://eventespresso.com/forums/2011/08/limit-number-of-recurring-events-in-widget/comment-page-1/#comment-9368

Please note that the above modification uses the stock event list templates and adds a small modification to the loop in the event_list.php template.
