I’ve just tried updating EE to the latest version and it crashed my very busy site. I’ve requested a backup restore from my web hosts but I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this or understands this error which has replaced my site …

Redownload version 5.0.8.p from your account page.
Then on the site go to Dashboard -> Plugins -> Add New -> Upload plugin.
Select the .zip file you just downloaded and upload. WordPress should tell you there is a version already installed and ask if you want to replace it, do so.
Thanks Tony, but I haven’t got access to the site’s dashboard, the site’s crashed and been replaced with the EE error above. Once the backup is restored I will update WP and several other plugins but will leave EE until I feel confident that the update is stable. I trust that the previous version of EE is compatible with the latest version of WordPress. The list of recent critical core errors in this forum fills me with dread and I hope someone is taking the matter in hand and will provide an explanation.
All of the critical errors you are seeing are the same issue but I understand your concern.
It’s something that none of our test sites have so not something we could reproduce until a user sent me their database and I could find the cause, they’d now been fixed.
