I have to make a decision soon on an event manager. As I read more I find I have more questions.

As I am trying to sort this out – here are my need/wants – Do I want EE3 or EE4? Any of the must-haves that EE3/4 are missing?

Required:
Sell tickets to guests (not logged in)
Not oversell capacity (like my last solution)
Accepts Paypal & Offline (cash) payments
No registration w/o payment (or deposit)
Works for a course (more than one class session, register/pay once)
Gather basic info about registrant (name, phone, email)

It would be nice if it also did:
MailChimp for all registered for a class
Deposit to reserve a seat
Automatic confirmation email after registration
“Board” style page of current offerings

From what I read, if I go with EE3, I also get EE4 – does this means I can install both and see which works better for me?

If I go with EE3, can I migrate the data to EE4 later on? or will these continue to be two different products?

Hi Joan,

I’ll break your sections down to provide some extra info.

Sell tickets to guests (not logged in)

Using EE3 you can sell tickets to both logged in and non logged in users, providing different pricing for each if needed. With EE4 currently all users are the same.

Not oversell capacity (like my last solution)

Each event has a limit in which the event will close when reached, preventing further sales. EE4 takes this further in that each ticket can also have limits set.

Accepts Paypal & Offline (cash) payments

Cash payments depends on how you would like this to work, we have offline payment methods, such as Invoice & Check payments. So when placing a registration the user would select invoice/check to finish the registration, then pay with whichever means you provide.

No registration w/o payment (or deposit)

Registrations are placed BEFORE payment… however, the registration DOES NOT apply to the attendee list/limit until payment is made. It works slightly different between EE3 and EE4 however essentially the outcome is the same, until payment is made (or the admin modifies the registration) the attendee does not apply to the limits.

This is to allow for maximum flexibility and can be altered within the settings if required.

Works for a course (more than one class session, register/pay once)

EE3 allows this by basically allowing you to assign a alternative registration event for your events, so can create events 1-5, then set events 2-5 to use event 1 for registration. I can provide more details on this if needed.

EE4 handles this much better with the ticketing options available for each event. See here for more detaisl – https://eventespresso.com/features/multiple-ticket-pricing-options/

That page is geared much more towards EE4 currently but some applies to EE3 also.

Gather basic info about registrant (name, phone, email)

This is a standard feature available within both versions. You can create custom questions and custom question groups to assign to events.

MailChimp for all registered for a class

EE3 supports MailChimp but not EE4 at this time.

Deposit to reserve a seat

Currently deposits (partial payments) are not officially support within either version of Event Espresso.

Automatic confirmation email after registration

This is also a standard feature within both versions.

“Board” style page of current offerings

I’m sorry I’m not sure exactly what this means, can you explain a little more?

From what I read, if I go with EE3, I also get EE4 – does this means I can install both and see which works better for me?

That’s correct. The EE3 license include access to the EE4 Core Plugin. You can use either version but can only have either EE3 or EE4 active at any time, NOT both.

If I go with EE3, can I migrate the data to EE4 later on? or will these continue to be two different products?

Yes you can migrate your data from EE3 to EE4, however they will remain 2 separate products. EE4 has been designed to leave your EE3 data intact, but once you have migrated to EE4 those events are within a completely different database and as such any new registrations/events created within EE4 will not be available within EE3 if you switch back.

Hopefully that answers your questions but if you would like further explanation just let me know.

You can ‘try out’ EE4 by signing up to test drive available at http://demoee.org/

Thank you for the response. It goes a long way to sway my decision. I have asked similar questions in other forums about other products and get pointed to read the FAQ.

I don’t know how to explain “board” style listings. I did find a picture:

Doesn’t look like the picture link made it – http://dixcquypdhb9e.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/edd/2014/01/screenshot-21.png

Ahhh a Pinterest style layout (pinboard).

EE3’s Custom Templates add on has a Grid template (https://eventespresso.com/product/grid-template/) it’s not exactly what you are after, but similar.

I believe, though there is no confirmation yet, that we are considering templates for EE4 and a pinterest style one may be in there.

As mentioned this is still up in the sky so I cannot guarantee if/when it will happen.

You could achieve this look either via a pinterest style theme (example http://take.ms/CY98U) or by modifying/creating a template yourself.
