Hello – I am hoping you can help me understand the behavior I am seeing and suggest a path to fixing it.

We have an Event, call it A, we would like to offer complimentary or heavily discounted tickets to, but only to specific individuals. So we created single use promotion codes for those individuals.

We are using Multi-Event Registration, so people can add tickets to several events to their cart. When someone adds more than 1 ticket to event A, we would like the promotion code to only apply to 1 of those tickets, i.e. a single use.

We have tried using percentage based promotion codes, but the percentage discount is applied to all the tickets for event A in the cart. So if someone wants to sign up for 10 tickets and they have the single use complimentary pass code, they get 10 free tickets, not 1.

We are struggling to use a dollar discount code because we have two different kinds of tickets – a 3 day and a 1 day pass – and each has a ‘public’, ‘member’ and ‘student’ ticket – so 6 different tickets total.

If we want to give someone a discount good for a 1 day pass, we would like it to apply to the purchase of a 3 day pass – which is exactly what happens now – it works great, they get a portion of their 3 day pass paid for.

The question is what should the dollar amount of the discount be.
When we generate the code we do not know if the person is a student or member of the public. So we do not know, at the time we are generating the code, what dollar value to give it (a percentage would work so well!). One approach is to give it the value of the public ticket – which is the most expensive ticket. Here is the problem with that:

3 day passes – public: $500, member: $425, student: $200
1 day passes – public: $250, member: $175, student: $85

If we give a student a code for a 1 day public pass ($250), they can use it to get a free 3 day pass ($200) – not at all what we wanted!

I am hoping there is a simple way to change the behavior of the percentage discount so it does not apply to all applicable items in the cart, but only as many as there are “Uses”. For us, that seems like the cleanest way to achieve our goal.

Is that possible? Do you have another idea?

Thank you!

Bart

I am using EE4 Version 4.8.35.p, EE4 Promotions 1.0.5.p & EE4 Multiple Event Registration v2.0.9.p on WordPress 4.4.2

Hi Bart,

The behavior you’re seeing is by design because the promotions are applied at the cart level per scope item. At this time, the event is the scope. This means that if you have a percentage discount, the percentage discount will apply to the applicable items from that event. One of the tricky parts to this is, when you have multiple items from one event in the cart, and you want the promotion to only apply to one of them, which one should be applied?

If you have any ideas on how that should be handled, or any other ideas we’d love to hear them. You’re invited to vote on and leave a comment where we’re tracking interest for a ticket level promotion feature.
