Hi Guys
I’m still not sure what the difference is in behaviour between types and categories of PEOPLE?

I’ve set up two types: Rider Coaches and Rider Coach Leaders

I’ve assigned 10 people to the latter and all to the former.

When editing an event I see the Assign checkboxes down the right hand side but weirdly I see ALL people in both list of checkbox even though only 10 are assigned to rider coach leaders?

When and why would I also need to start using People Categories…. I just created one and cant see that show up in edit event?

We also need a way for coaches to login and view their upcoming schedule of classes they are assigned to…. is there any existing way for them to do that or do we need to write custom reports?

thanks so much for any clarification 🙂

Jonathan

I’m now thinking we should ditch the EE People Add On and use WP Users to set up our trainers/coaches.

Would that be better and used Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) to allow us to assign coaches/trainers to events?

Then a members plugin to create restricted ages and then Gravity forms to generate the coaches schedules of events

OR AM I MISSING an existing feature of EE4 that does all this already as you would hope to be able to generate staff schedules for events from the EE plugin?

thanks

Hi Jonathan,

I can explain a few things about what the People add-on and WP User add-on actually can be used for, and offer a few ideas to point you in the right direction.

So first, the People add-on is primarily for displaying information about event staff. So for example the event page will list the staff assigned, and the People Custom Post type will display the events that the staff member is assigned to. The categories and types can be used to organize and group together different types of staff roles. The People add-on gives you a built-in taxonomy (People Category) and you can add more types of categories with Types. All are custom WP taxonomies.

Now with regards to using WP Users to set up trainers and coaches, that will not work because the WP User add-on is for connecting attendees to WP User accounts, it’s not for event staff.

We also need a way for coaches to login and view their upcoming schedule of classes they are assigned to

The People Custom post type will automatically display a list of all the events they are involved with. If you want to, that list can be changed to only show upcoming events by making a few code additions.

When editing an event I see the Assign checkboxes down the right hand side but weirdly I see ALL people in both list of checkbox even though only 10 are assigned to rider coach leaders?

This is actually by design. This allows you to assign a staff member to a specific group for a specific event.

Hi Josh
Thank you so much for clarification.

Sorry yes I didn’t mean the WP Users addon for EE. I meant just use wordpress users to add our staff and then ACF to allow us to assign them to event via custom fields.

My client doesn’t want public to see coaches schedules etc or for each coach to see another coaches schedule so it needs to remain private so probably best i disable the People Add on. Or I could restrict those pages to coaches only with a members plugin.

But If I did want to customise those people taxonomy pages that show events people are assigned to is there an example of that anywhere in your docs? as right now it just shows the event name and link…. could we change that to show dates, times etc

Thanks
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

While the docs do not have an example that shows exactly how to customize the people Custom post type template, it’s not too complicated. You copy the content-espresso_people-details.php file from the people add-on’s /public/templates/ folder into your WordPress child theme, then make the edits to the loop in you copy of the template.
