Why is there nothing about this switch in the EE4 changelog? I usually read them before updating, but this wouldn’t have possibly saved me from what appears to be a feature removal.
It was only the ‘With Event Espresso you can accept payments with PayPal Express’ email that told me that this has happened. Which version was it that did it?
And why wasn’t there a ‘we’re thinking about doing this’ warning and discussion before it happened??

Hi Ian,
If you are currently using PayPal Standard it will not have been disabled on your install, PayPal standard is still available within EE and will remain so for any users that are currently using it, there’s also a filter within EE to enable PayPal Standard if needed:

PayPal standard was ‘hidden’ from installs that aren’t already using it from version 4.9.17 when PayPal Express was included within core.
Looks like you are currently using 4.9.30, did you have any problems continuing to use PayPal Standard?

The change only effects users that aren’t already using PayPal standard, so either it continues to work as it was before or PayPal standard is hidden and a ‘better’ alternative (PayPal Express) is provided if you chose to use PayPal in the future.
The PayPal Express payment method uses the same PayPal account type as standard, it just requires different credentials from your account but the big difference with PayPal Express is it does not use IPN’s meaning its more reliable than standard and has now become the default payment method for PayPal with EE moving forward.
