Hi. I have a paypal account for my business. I’ve been reading the documents and I am confused. There is lots of reference to Paypal Express but then comments about Paypal Express being “deprecated”. I only have Paypal Commerce button on my Payment methods and I’ve read Commerce is different than the Paypal account I have. Can I not set up Paypal payment acceptance on here?

Hi Teresa,

You can choose Paypal Commerce over PayPal Express, as PayPal Commerce offers the same features and more features including payments by card, payments by PayPal accounts, etc.

You can get more information about PayPal commerce here:
https://help.eventsmart.com/article/314-paypal-commerce-payment-gateway-integration

You can also check the PayPal Express documentation here: https://help.eventsmart.com/article/168-paypal-express-payment-gateway

Ok, but what I don’t get is that Paypal commerce is the ONLY button offered. I have just plain old Paypal. Do I use the Paypal commerce to set it up? I found the API information for my Paypal. The instructions only refer to Paypal express, which is not an option in my software. This is what is confusing me.

I don’t have Paypal express OR Paypal commerce. I just have plain old Paypal. Does that make sense?

You can use that account to use the defaulpaypal commerce that is installed in the core.

you can read documentation here https://eventespresso.com/wiki/paypal-commerce-checkout-payment-gateway/

The same paypal account can be used for other paypal plugin that can be found here.

If you need anything, feel free to let us know.

Hi there,

I just wanted to jump in and explain a little more about the different PayPal integrations and why you can only see PayPal Commerce.

PayPal Standard, PayPal Express, & PayPal Commerce (there are more but those are the most common you’ll see when using Event Espresso) are all ‘integration methods’ for how your site communicates with PayPal to make a payment.

PayPal standard is the oldest, it’s what we all know of PayPal from the beginning of PayPal payments where you go to the Paypal site, make a payment and you’re directed back to the site again. PayPal sends an ‘IPN’ request to your site to tell the site a payment was made and when it processes that it can mark the payment complete. This is now considered unreliable and we deprecated it a while ago.

PayPal Express was basically an improvement on the above, it works in a similar way to only rather than PayPal sending an IPN… your site sends a request to Paypal using details from the user when they were sent back to the site. That request was then used to confirm the payment. So Express switched it around from your site waiting for PayPal to notify them of a payment to your site actually making a request to check for a payment, it’s more reliable that way. This ‘can’ still work, but PayPal have deprecated the integration method so it’s no longer actively worked on, therefor we deprecated the PayPal Express payment method.

PayPal Commerce is PayPal’s latest integration method, they are focusing their development on adding/improving the features within it rather than the others. Again it works a little differently than the above and it ‘connects’ to your PayPal account differently (in a ‘better’ way). As PayPal add new features, they will add them to commerce so this is the integration method we currently use and advise customers to use.

The reason you don’t see the old/deprecated payment methods is we don’t show them for new users, the reason for that is to prevent new users from opting to use those older/deprecated payment methods simply from being familiar with the naming from reading here etc. You could choose say PayPal standard, run into issues with it and the first answer we would reply with is that it has been deprecated and you should move to commerce … similar situation with PayPal Express. So rather than leave them visible to play swap and change between them, we leave them available for users already using them (and advise they switch when possible) and show only the ‘latest’ integration method for any new users.

For the most part, the PayPal account you need is the same for all of the above integration methods, it’s just how EE connects to that account and how payment requests are made etc that changes.

In sort, PayPal commerce is the integration method you should use for PayPal as it stands unless you run into issues connecting your account, in which case we can investigate further.
