I received my first registration today. I have a few questions regarding the paypal/payment process. I use paypal standard and I verified my email address is correct and the paypal sandbox option is set to “no.”

1. On the registrations page, I had to click on the little shopping cart (View transaction details) and “Apply Payment”. Do I have to do this for every registration?

2. I did not have the Paypal IPN set up initially (at the time the person registered and I “applied payment”) but I have since followed the instructions (here: https://eventespresso.com/wiki/how-to-set-up-paypal-ipn/#paypal). Since I did these out of order, will the person’s payment go through?

3. I have not received any funds in my paypal account yet…is there a delay from Event Espresso to Paypal or do the funds show up immediately?

Hi Kelsa,

No, you should not need to do this but it relates to….

That’s likely why the payment did not show up in EE. PayPal sends an IPN to your site to tell EE that a payment has been made, if IPN’s were disabled on your account when the payment was made then no IPN would have been sent by PayPal and therefor EE doesn’t know a payment was made.

The persons payment should still go through in PayPal, but this part is confusing with this…

3. I have not received any funds in my paypal account yet…is there a delay from Event Espresso to Paypal or do the funds show up immediately?

No, there is no delay between a user making a payment and the funds going into your account. With PayPal EE just basically passes all of the details over to PayPal and they handle everything else. So when your registrant is directed to PayPal they take the money from that users account and it goes directly to yours. We (EE) do not have any dealings with that part of the payment.

So the money should show in your account already.

Are you sure the user pai via PayPal? Did you receive a payment confirmation from PayPal?

If you go to Event Espresso -> Payment Methods -> PayPal standard.

Do you have your PayPal account email address set there within ‘Paypal Email’?

Yes the correct email is listed under Payment Methods -> Paypal standard.

After setting up the IPN, we’ve tried to register ourselves and it is still not working. I had my assistant go in and use her personal email address and pay by entering her personal credit card. We’ve tried 3 different cards and here’s the error message we receive for each one:

“The card you entered cannot be used for this payment. Please enter a different credit or debit card number.”

I’m afraid to call the person back who already tried to register once until I know for certain that this is resolved and they won’t continue to experience an issue.

Tony, I can see you tried to register & pay on 2/8- what did that look like for you? Did it work? I can see it listed under “incomplete transaction” – what does that mean exactly?

Hi Kelsa,

Any of the following can cause the error you saw:

  • Your card is associated with a specific PayPal account, and you’re not logging in with that account.
  • Your card was associated with a PayPal account that has since been closed.
  • You linked the card to a PayPal account, but have not yet confirmed it.
  • You exceeded your card limit with the PayPal system.
  • Your email address is raising a red flag in PayPal’s system.
  • Your browser is not accepting cookies. You can clear any existing cookies and try again.

You can also avoid the error you say if you add the credit card to a PayPal account and use it as the funding source for transactions through the PayPal account. If none of these points apply to you you can call PayPal Customer service. 1-888-221-1161
