Hi there,

Error 504 is an error on the server side, usually because the server is under high load.

When exactly do you get the above error? When saving the credentials on your site in Event Espresso -> Payment methods?

Hi,

Yes, Event Expresso -> Payment Methods -> PayPal Express. I enter the API details from the PayPal account and click the Update PayPal Express Payment Settings button.

At that point I get the 504 error. The nginx code is 1.5.17

That’s the version of nginx the server is running, unfortunately, it doesn’t help.

Does the same happen if you hit save on the Invoice payment method?

If you don’t have that payment method active, please temporarily activate it and try to save the settings there, does it show error 504 again?

Hi,

I deactivated the PayPal Express payment method, made sure no other payment methods were active.

Then, as you suggested I activated the Invoice payment method, made a couple of changes and saved. That worked fine, no 504 error.

Follow up, interestingly though, when I was trying out the Invoice payment method it did flag an error against the invoice logo saying that the link to the invoice_logo.png appeared to be broken. I FTPd to the file and it was there. So, I had to erase the link to the png on the Invoice payment method page to enable me to save the settings.

Ok, so when you save the PayPal Express form it sends a request to PayPal to validate your credentials, it looks your server doesn’t like that request and it causes a 504.

You’ll need to contact your host and have them investigate this further, it could be the request is triggering some form of security on the server which returns 504.

The URL validation was another possibility of the error, however since you get that on the Invoice payment method without a 504, it’s unlikely that’s causing the problem on the PayPal Express payment method.

Hi,

I’ve since found out that there is an issue with the PayPal account itself, si I’m guessing that’s the cause. Once resolved, I’ll try again. So ofr the moment can I keep this open until I report back.

Sure, we don’t close threads unless it is very clear the thread is resolved.

However, note that threads will automatically close if there is no activity for 14 days. If that happens just post another and include a link to whichever thread you are referring to, we can merge the two together if needed.
