Paypal Express Checkout In Context?

We are deciding between using Paypal Express and Paypal Pro. We like the idea that Paypal Pro allows for the transactions to be processed on the site but also like, for security reasons, that Paypal Express transactions are processed on Paypal’s site. With WooCommerce the transactions are processed by Paypal, but they appear “in context” so it looks like the customer is still on the original site. Can that be done with Event Expresso and Paypal Express? Our concern is that people will see the message about being transferred to Paypal and then see the Paypal login screen and it will cause some of them to abandon their purchases.

Also, with Paypal Pro are the credit card numbers stored on the website or only at Paypal?

You can accept payments on your site (both credit cards and PayPal) with the PayPal Express with Smart buttons add-on. You’ll find more information here:

Only the last 4 digits on your site. I’m not sure whether or not PayPal stores the full credit card numbers.

Thanks. I will look at that link.

I activated Paypal Express Checkout Smart Buttons payment Gateway, and the only option when clicking on the Paypal or Paypal Credit buttons is to sign into your Paypal account or create a Paypal account. We want people to be able to do the guest checkout. The only way for the guest checkout to happen is if someone clicks on the individual card buttons below the Paypal buttons. Given that, could the guest checkout link that is activated when clicking on a credit card icon be used with the button that says Paypal We could then hide the Paypal Credit and individual credit card buttons. Also, on that same page, can the Method of Payment (Paypal) box be checked by default since there isn’t another way to pay? If it’s checked by default then we can hide it because most people aren’t going to think to click on it.

I can see the Paypal button URL in the payment methods, but I would like to replace that with the URL that takes customers to the guest checkout only. I cannot find the guest checkout URL.

Actually, no. The credit card buttons are for paying by credit card, and the PayPal buttons are for paying with PayPal.

Yes. You go to Event Espresso > Payment Methods > PayPal Express Checkout with Smart Buttons Settings, then set the Open by Default Setting to Yes.

None of our customers will be checking out with a Paypal account, and they also will not think to click on the credit cards to do the guest checkout. Is there a way to change those buttons where instead of having individual credit card icons, it could instead have a button that says Paypal Guest Checkout?

No there isn’t.

If none of your customers will be checking out with a PayPal account, then a credit card only gateway like Stripe is recommended.

They will use Paypal as the payment gateway as a guest, but not set up a Paypal account, which is what the first two buttons require. Most will click on the first button, see that it requires a Paypal account, they’ll then back out. What I want is to have one button that says Paypal, and it takes customers to the Paypal guest checkout. Or have a situation like the organization’s has custom code for their donate button that opens with a simple choice of Donate with Paypal or Donate with a Credit or Debit card. Something like that would be ideal for Event purchases. Can it be done with php?

No, I’m afraid there isn’t PHP that can change this. The JavaScript that outputs the buttons comes directly from PayPal. The buttons that PayPal provide are served by PayPal within an iframe, so what’s provided cannot be changed.

One last question. Can the top two buttons be hidden with CSS like using display: none? Or will it hide all or nothing?

Do you mean the PayPal and PayPal Credit buttons?

If so, they cannot be hidden with CSS because they’re served from PayPal and displayed via an iframe.

You can achieve a PayPal-less gateway by other means, like use Stripe or another alternative.
