Hello, I just received a registration and its payment, but when I check the registration status for that person, in the Transaction Status box at the top, it says Incomplete. This creates an error in my files as the person doesn’t show up in the attendee list and in the accounting files. However if I scroll down, all seems ok: Could you let me know what could be going on here? |
Hi there, Which payment method are you using? |
the registrant used paypal standard, and I received the email from paypal that the payment has been received. |
After the user paid via PayPal did they return to your site? (If you do not have auto return enabled on your PayPal account the user needs to click ‘Return to XX site’ on PayPal) Within your PayPal account do you have auto return enabled? |
hi, yes I just double checked now to be sure, the auto return is enabled. Maybe the user just closed the session before returning to the site? |
but if he did so, how is it possible that event espresso marked the registration as completed? |
by the way, the Payment Data Transfer (optional) is OFF, not sure if this should normally be turned on? I have received close to hundred successful registrations from paypal so I would be surprised if any setting is wrong, but still wanted to check. |

Going through the paypal options, this could be what happened – I have the paypal account optional turned on. Check the last paragraph: If this feature is activated it allows customers with a PayPal cookie who do not own a PayPal account (eg. Returning PP guest users) to pay with their bank account or credit card for a certain number of transactions without opening a PayPal account rightaway. This feature is available for PayPal Express, Basis, Starter, Einzelzahlung, Spenden. They will pay for their goods with a bank account or credit card and fill in a few small details about themselves. They will be able to sign up to PayPal afterwards. Customers who already have a PayPal account will checkout in the traditional manner. The PayPal Account Optional Feature is available for merchants using the following PayPal payment solutions: Express Checkout, ‘Buy Now’, ‘Donations’ and ‘Shopping Cart’ buttons. Note: If you have chosen to turn on PayPal Account Optional for new users and enabled a function called ‘Auto Return,’ the new users will not return to your website automatically. They will be able to choose to return. |
If you take a look at the transaction now, is it still Incomplete?
The registration is updated when the IPN is received from PayPal, the transaction is locked until the user returns to the site. A cron job is created in case the user does not return to the site which should update the transaction once the session expires. The main reason for this is to prevent the IPN and the user hitting the server at the same time trying to update the same details. |

I added a new payment of zero chf and then it converted the transaction to complete. I guess it was just a one off error, which I discovered by complete coincidence. I checked the previous registrations and this never happened before. Will report if it happens again. |
Yeah it’s a strange one. The important part is that the registration updated the status to Approved (this applies the registration to the event regardless of the transaction status). Please do keep us update if this happens again so we can investigate further. |
