Not Getting All IPN / Incomplete Payment

Hey there,

I have searched the forums and tried all of the fixes I can find, but I’m baffled.

For some reason, a few of my registration records will process fine (Payment showing Complete), however, a number of the payments I’m receiving are showing as incomplete, even though I receive the funds into my PayPal account.

Looking at my log files, I seem to only receive logs of the Completed payments, which leads me to believe some of the IPN messages are not sending?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Adam,

I’ve seen this happen if the transactions page has been set to private.

Could you ensure that all Event Espresso pages have their shortcodes setup and that they are all published?

Then please see this guide:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/how-to-set-up-paypal-ipn/#troubleshooting

Also, could you double-check that you are running a current version of the Event Espresso software?

All pages are created correctly and public. I’m also running the most up to date version of EE3.

What’s hard to figure out is the intermittent success. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn’t.

Are their certain server configurations that need to be in place? I recently moved to a dedicated server, not sure if there’s anything I can look into that might be causing the issue.

Hi Adam,

One thing it might be is that sometimes PayPal’s return notification is just too slow.

Have you tried the Simplified Transaction Template? This might help https://eventespresso.com/topic/problems-with-incomplete-payments-download/

Hey Dean,

That solution doesn’t seem to be working for me either. Installed and activated as stated in the instructions, and no luck.

Hi again,

It seems that after switching to the simple taxation page, I am now getting ‘PayPal’ to display in the type Column.

But I still receive the Incomplete icon in the Status column.

Any reason why one portion of the IPN would seemingly be working find now, but not another?

Hi Adam,

If PayPal is having trouble communicating with your server, the IPN will fail. If you go to your PayPal account and look at the IPN history, it will list each notification along with a checkbox where you can select a transaction and resend the notification. It will also have a status and response code. Normally the codes will be 200, which means the response was okay, but if it’s a 404 that means PayPal couldn’t find your server.

If you can look up the registrations that did pay, but didn’t get marked as complete in Event Espresso, you can try resending those from the PayPal IPN history.

Hey Josh,

My PayPal IPN History contains only the messages that were successfully sent back to my website. I don’t see any with error codes.

The payments I receive but do not show as complete on my WordPress Admin don’t have a corresponding IPN in the history at all.

Hoping I can get this figured out soon, I fear my client will be chasing me down with an axe in the near future 🙂

Hi Adam,

To be clear, I’m not referring to log files in /wp-content/uploads/espresso/logs where IPNs are logged, I’m referring to the IPN history in the PayPal account.

If you can’t find some of the payments in the PayPal account’s IPN history, you can let PayPal know that they are not sending all of the Payment notifications to your site. It may be helpful to show them a list of the Transaction ID’s from the payments that do not have an IPN entry.

Hey Josh,

Yes I was referring to the PayPal IPN History as well.

I am receiving all IPN messages now, after switching to the simplified transaction page. But like I mentioned above, only the Payment Type is being updated. All transactions still show as incomplete.

Can you clarify what you mean when you wrote this?

The payments I receive but do not show as complete on my WordPress Admin don’t have a corresponding IPN in the history at all.

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

Prior to the simple transactions page, I was receiving intermittent IPN messages. Now I am receiving them all, but only the Payment Type is being updated.

The Status still shows Incomplete.

Can you check to see if the payment amount is getting altered in any way? For example are taxes or shipping/handling fees being added through the PayPal account settings?
