Hi–I’m new to Event Espresso, we are taking over a website and I’m not exactly sure how it works. We are transferring the site to new hosting, but first we need to copy the site to a development server to do some updates. I have two main questions: 1) Does the registration information live on my server or EE’s (I’m trying to figure out if we’ll lose new registrants if people sign up between when we copy the site and when we move it), and 2) Anything I ought to be sure of when I do the transfer? I would really appreciate any help, thank you!

Hi there,

The registration information is stored on your server in its database.

There are a few good guides to follow when you transfer the site from one server to the other:

http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress#Moving_to_a_New_Server

and

http://sltaylor.co.uk/blog/moving-wordpress-new-domain-server/

There are also plugins like WP Migrate DB Pro which do a nice job migrating the data from one server to another:

Thanks Josh! I know a bit about moving WP hosting in general, I meant specific to EE. But it is super-helpful to understand that it is stored in my database and not in some sort of an EE cloud…unfortunately that means that between the time I copy the site to the development server (keeping the old one live) and the time I change the dns to point to the new server with the new site–I’ve lost any new registrations that come in. Does anyone have any bright ideas for a temporary workaround?
Thanks again!

Sure. One is to wait to migrate until a point where it’s between active registration times.

If that isn’t possible, the WP Migrate DB plugin may just be what you’re looking for. It has the ability to sync the database from one WP site to another. So you can do one last database sync right after the DNS change. You’ll likely need to shut down registrations for a few hours while you do the work with a maintenance page plugin.

Thank you so much, Josh! The problem was, there wasn’t going to be much downtime…but I wasn’t thinking about RE-syncing the database right before we were ready to go live. Of course, that is the perfect solution. Thanks so much!
