I am a very technical person, so please understand I have tried everything I can think of or have found as suggestions on your forum. The EE payment settings for PayPal IPN have stopped working. My IPN transaction log only shows transactions up to Feb 2014 and then nothing has been recorded in the log. All 4 EE pages exist and are public. My PayPal account is accepting payments from other sources just fine including my shopping cart and direct payments through email. Again… EE with IPN was working up until Feb. 2014 I get this error: “Return to merchant and try a different payment method” |
|
Oh and the Gateway folder under Uploads/Espresso is empty. The other Log file has also stopped records any transactions as of Feb 2014. Not sure what occured then… but to my knowledge nothing about my website changed until last week when I moved it to new hosting. Everything about the site is functioning fine. My client only just informed me of the issue with the PayPal not working. She just kept thinking it was human error. I see now it is not. |

EE Version 3.1.36.5.P |
Hi Deirdre, You mentioned that you moved hosts. Was this a case where the host you moved the site from is a linux server and the host you moved to is a Windows server? |
|
|
Hi Josh… nope both Linux servers and the issue was occuring before the hosting move. We only moved last week but the issue has been ongoing since February 2014. |
Hello, I saw your note about this message: Return to merchant and try a different payment method Could you please link to any event on your site so I can take a look? — |
|
|
sure I have a test event set up for $1… just in case it does go through. |
Hello, I received the following error on PayPal.com: http://cl.ly/image/250V2T2f0P3j I’m researching this message and I’ll update this support post shortly. — |

Here is a thread in the PayPal forums about this issue: |

Hi Seth, NO this is the Sellers Account causing the issue. The thread you sent me is about buyers having the issue their own accounts. MY Seller (which is my website client)… all her customers CANNOT purchase through EE, yet I have a shopping cart attached to her PayPal account from her site that is functioning just fine. And mind you EE was working up until February 19, 2014. So something has changed inside either your software or PayPal that now you two are not playing nice together. If I cannot get this resolved, we may have to find a new event plugin… but not my ideal choice. |
|
Another thing that is weird… on this client’s PayPal account, there is no option to pay with a Credit Card. Meaning you can only login to PayPal to pay… that’s where the error occurs… right at that point of logging in. |
|
Lorenzo… YES that is the screen I see and what all our client’s are seeing. How do we get this resolved. |
Hi Deirdre, Event Espresso hasn’t changed the PayPal gateway for quite some time, and thousands of other Event Espresso users have continued to used the standard PayPal gateway since Feb. 19 with no new issues. Have any settings been changed within this PayPal account, or were any other plugins added to this WP site or updated around Feb. 19? You might try using another browser to test the payments because if you’ve recently logged into PayPal.com, they’ll track the cookies they leave and assume that you have a PayPal account when you go to checkout. More info about that in this stackexchange thread: |

To answer the questions posted above: 1. No new plugins have been added overall. The site has remained the same. I also deleted temp cache files and cookies too to make sure this was not the case. I will try again to make sure. Let me ask… if I deactivate & delete the EE plugin and then reinstall… will I lose the events that are already listed? |
Hi Deirdre, Reinstalling Event Espresso does not remove any event information. The plugin is removed from here: wp-content/plugins/event-espresso Then it is replaced. We do recommend backing up before making any changes as its a good practice: https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups — |

I understand you say reinstall… however does that mean I can follow this process: 1. Deactivate Plugin in WP Dashboard All events will remain… will general settings need to be reset or will those come back as well. Curious… if I delete the EE pages and recreate them do you feel this would have any effect. It’s just so perplexing. I have a shopping cart on this same site that uses PayPal and I was just able to use it and sign in to my PayPal account to make a purchase. I then go back to purchase this event, and as soon as I click submit after entering my password at PayPal… boom back to the error screen. Weird how the seller’s PayPal account works fine for all other avenues from the same website except EE. I know it may not be a huge issue for EE Support as you state thousands of other users are working just fine… guess I am just small potatoes! |
Hello, Those are the steps that I would follow to perform a reinstall. It does not remove any events or delete the WP pages with the Event Espresso shortcodes. Please backup before making any changes. — |

Yes I have BackupBuddy from iThemes that I use for a complete backup. Thanks for the advice. I hope this works, but fear it is more related to something in PayPal. |
Deirdre, Please understand that we don’t think your issue isn’t important, we want to help you get this resolved. The reason I brought up that the PayPal gateway is working on thousands of other customer’s sites is to help assure you that the issues isn’t within Event Espresso’s code. I think you have a good idea with re-installing a fresh copy of Event Espresso, because that may help in the case that anything within the Event Espresso plugin was accidentally changed. Going through and deleting Event Espresso pages and shortcodes is probably not necessary though. It comes down to whether or not the [ESPRESSO_EVENTS] shortcode is on the main registration page. If that is set up correctly, you see the events and the checkout process steps function, if it’s not set up correctly, you will not see any event info or see an option to register. |
