Hi Guys (and Gals), I am trying to set up a webpage (or group of pages) for a comic convention held across a few different countries. I love EE and wanted to use it for event handling and payments. The problem I have is that since the payments are coming from multiple countries the currency is different. I read that you cant assign a currency for a single event, rather it is defined for all events. So my question, and the solution I have so far is, Can I use EE with Multisite to allow multiple currencies? I set up my webpage as a Multisite Network with the idea that if I could install EE individually on each sub-page under a different database table that I may be able to complete what I need. Is this a valid option, or if not are there better options for me to go with? Thanks

Hi Mike — What country are you located in? I ask because many gateways can handle payments from other countries and do their own currency exchange. The difference is that they pay out in whatever currency is native to the gateway. PayPal, for example, can accept payments in many different currencies, but when it goes to you, they do an exchange to dollars (but PayPal also supports other currencies if you are outside the US). The only reason you’d want to do this is if you actually need to take payments in those different currencies and have them stay in those currencies, for example, if you had different offices in different countries. (I did a customization for this site where that’s what they needed — so they have an Australian gateway and a British gateway active for events that take place either in England or Australia.) If that’s not the case, it’s just a matter of picking a gateway that can do the currency exchange (and, as I said, PayPal can handle this). To answer your question, though, while technically Event Espresso can be used on a multisite, automatic updates don’t work yet, and customizations to the template files will apply across the entire network. There’s also been weirdness that’s been reported in the mobile app (which may or may not be resolved with the new Event Espresso HD iPad/iOS app that uses the JSON API). The other reason this wouldn’t be ideal, though, is that you’d need to have different events for each sub-site — they wouldn’t all link up together — so you couldn’t have an accurate attendee count. Also, our support licenses only support a maximum of 5 sites for the developer license, so if you had more sites than that, we wouldn’t be able to provide support for those sites beyond the first 5. |

Hey Chris, Thanks for the quick reply. To answer your question I live in Canada so the Paypal solution you offered is possible. I see your point as well with having multiple events for each sub site, for us we do need to keep track of attendee’s so that may be a problem. I will have to look into the project I am working on in more detail to see if simply using Paypal to handle the conversions is acceptable, or if I will have to find another way. Either way it is nice to know that it is possible, even if it requires a bit more code and work, to use EE for multiple payments. I do have the EE app installed on my Android phone for testing with a single EE install and it works wonderfuly at the moment but I do get that once I change to a multisite the app may have problems due to the multiple database tables. Once again thank you for your help (and sadly the link you posted does not work. I am very curious to see what that page may look like). |
Really? I just pulled it up. Try this: http://www.logikalprojects.com.au/ A little info about that site: They have a country dropdown on the top right corner. That controls whether you are looking at the AU events or the UK events. Each are just Event Espresso category event lists, and they have their events split into different categories. They have a couple locations in Australia, but only one location in England (London). So for the checkout process and for the reg pages we do a bunch of check against the category for things like the currency symbol and then, later, which gateway to display. If the event is in the London category, we display the £ symbol and the UK gateway. If it’s not, it’s one of the Australian locations and we display AU $ and the Australian gateway. |
