I have an issue with multiple copies of messages being sent; looking for tips on what might cause that. Recently switched from Braintree to PayPal standard and have seen some other odd problems with payments not going through on the PayPal side, so also wondering if there is any connection.

This evening, had a paid registration for one person that sent, according to the message log,
– 3 Payment confirmations to the primary (hfortner…)
– 2 copies of the Registration confirmation to the Event Admin (me)
– 2 copies of the Reg Conf to the registrant
all within 5 minutes. Registrations list shows only one hfortner registered, which is correct. There are a few minor issues in the messages content that I’ve cleaned up, but so far as I can tell nothing is “wrong” other than the simple quantity of confirmations. Possible this is a non-repeatable one-off glitch, and I’m willing to give it a wait-&-see if that seems appropriate. Also new versions of WordPress and EE4, which always makes me worry.

You can see a screen cap of the message log at https://www.ninthdistrictpta.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Screen-Shot-2023-04-05-at-12.18.28-AM.png

Thanks!

Hi there,

After our previous discussion on PayPal payment methods HERE I’m curious why you’ve chosen to use PayPal Standard? It’s the most unreliable PayPal integration available and we deprecated it in favour of PayPal Express a long time ago now.

(The PayPal Express and Pro integrations have been deprecated in v5+ in favour of PayPal Commerce for the improvements Commerce brings and Pro has been deprecated by PayPal themselves, but they are still much more usable than Standard)

If you open the EE_Transaction for the above, what does it show in the payments section?

To open the transaction find the Registration in Event Espresso -> Registrations and click on the TXN Date column.

Well, every picture tells a story, don’t it? Yes, we used Braintree for years, thousands of transactions, I never knew it to mis-handle a transaction, but I’m just one guy (at the bottom) in an organization. Braintree for us is an accounting nightmare – blizzard of daily transfers that we really only need weekly, and bizarre monthly statements that don’t fit in with out generally accepted accounting standards. When we first chose BT years ago, it, for some reason(s) I’ve forgotten was the only one of your payment publications that met out needs. Huzzah, let’s use that.

Recently the Treasurer who has to deal with the accounting side launched a campaign to go back to PayPal, the original PayPal (IDF?) has already been deprecated, and I had no data anyone would believe to say this method is unreliable, so in my mind I agreed to experiment with some small events with PayPal. I have EE5 running in Staging, but I didn’t want to upgrade our production site the EE5 until after our big event June 3, which means this PayPal is available.

So now we have some real world data with PayPal and very late last night the same Treasurer said to me “maybe we should go back to Braintree.” You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing, so Huzzah, let’s use that.

Now to the present, in the Transactions, that registration with the multiple messages shows one “Complete” transaction for the proper amount, just as I expect, same in Registrations. Doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with any of that, just the messages. A second test with 2 people in a registration apparently went down normally, without issue.

Separate from the above, we have another small event where 2 users out of less than 20 have reported “can’t get it to work” for payments with PayPal. I got no details on that and the Treasurer solved their problem with a workaround, but there seems to be no record of them in Registrations, although I do see Tony Warwick.

So, I think I’m going to follow the treasurer’s advice and go back to Braintree, and push the idea of making a more deliberate selection to work with EE5 for next fiscal year, which starts in July.

Thanks!

Ok, so I did some digging into the site after my reply (that’s where the registration under my name is from).

The site had the PayPal Express payment method activated and not PayPal Standard. Which is good because PayPal Standard is considered the most unreliable and why we replaced it with Express (that’s why I was confused by you switching to PayPal Standard over Express).

PayPal Express I’ve not seen any reports of issues like this and not had any reports of multiple messages being triggered when using it but it’s obviously possible (it’s happened!).

So, I think I’m going to follow the treasurer’s advice and go back to Braintree, and push the idea of making a more deliberate selection to work with EE5 for next fiscal year, which starts in July.

If you want to try and work through this with PayPal Express to see if we can reproduce it on the site I’m more than happy to try but totally understand if you’d prefer to us BT for your event(s) currently.
