Last year when we launched our bilingual site with EE (3) & qTranslate plugin we had to customize and debug quite a few things.

Going forward, what are the plans to make EE 3 and 4 compatible with qTranslate and WPML ?

We are trying to plan ahead.
thx

Hi Florian,

Our policy, like that of many companies, is not to comment on future plans or work in progress.

Josh – seriously ? That’s a very cautious but very unhelpful answer. Have you heard about the strategy of pre-eminence ? You should read about it. It helps to grow your business.
Given your answer we might have to look elsewhere for a event management solution.

Hi Florian,

Thanks for the feedback and the generous advise.

you’re being sarcastic but I don’t find this funny. We’re paying for licenses and customizations, see that you are making updates & upgrades and enquire about what your plans are regarding making your software work with 2 most widely used multi-language plugins and you are basically saying: “we will not help you”.

Florian,

We understand and appreciate your interest to know what is coming with Event Espresso, but at times it is not appropriate to comment on future development. Many companies cannot and should not disclose development plans, for a variety of reasons. We do want to make our customers happy and we take a customer-centric approach, but that doesn’t mean that we should pursue every customer request.

In general we’ll do our best to facilitate the correct WordPress structure and code so that many translation plugins can work. We have a higher interest on the general translation not compatibility with a single plugin. We also have a process available for doing translations if you’re interested.

Let me know if I can do anything else for you.

It’s not about having a translation, we do not multi-languages as we are in Quebec, Canada where there are 2 official languages.

The issues we are having is about having had to customize EE to work with qTranslate, and now not being able to update themes and plugins easily and possibly getting new bugs with future updates. And this is without considering the EE v4.

We want to know whether EE has in its plans to become officially WPML and/or qTranslate compatible in the future. If not, we might plan do work with another solution.

Hi Florian,

Maybe I can offer a little guidance.

We have discussed integrating with WPML in one or two of our developer meetings. However, we don’t have any plans of integrating at this time. Here’s why:

In most cases, WPML works for very simple plugins. We have a lot of dynamic Event Espresso data (besides the thousands of text strings) that would need to be made WPML compatible. Such as attendee records, message templates, Venues, Ticket data, Datetime data. Pretty sure the event editor would blow up with WPML active and allowing multiple translations of an event, or at least different translated events would be referencing the same event meta such as table/tickets/datetimes.

We could just skip translating the Event Espresso data, and any of the strings that are loaded from the ‘event_espresso’ textdomain using the WP_LANG could be loaded using the ICL_LANGUAGE_CODE, if it’s there, and then fall back to WP_LANG if it’s not. BUT its not as easy as just flipping a switch and I don’t think adding that gives us the ability to say Event Espresso is “Now WPML Compatible”.

Also, we don’t think we should add any third party compatibility code directly to core. So, IF we do make Event Espresso compatible with WPML, we will have do it via an add-on. We may do it as an add-on eventually, but that could be a couple of years from now, as we expect it will take a quite a while to get to a point where we will have more developer resources available to start adding integrations with third-party applications and other complicated features.

We would LOVE, more than anything, to support every third-party plugin or service that is available to us, but you have to understand that we are a very small team of developers and support technicians. We value the WordPress and Event Espresso communities, but we just cannot be everything to everyone. We would rather produce a high quality plugin, and excellent support services, that a majority of small to medium sized businesses can use, but leave it open to third-party developers to easily integrate with other services and plugins.

I hope that helps answer your question. It’s not that we don’t want to do it. Or tell you that we plan on doing it, but then it never gets done. We just don’t have the resources available to us to get it done in a timely matter at this point in time.

Also, I apologize if our replies seem short or “sarcastic”, but please understand that our small support team (approx. 4 to 6 people) tries to keep up with hundreds of customer requests and support topics everyday. Our team feels that it is better to reply with a succinct, to the point, answer rather than letting customer questions sit for long periods of time. Leaving it open for the customer to provide more feedback or questions as needed.

Take care, Florian. We hope that you find a solution that works for your needs. Please be sure to let us know what you find. If you decide to stay with Event Espresso, maybe you can help develop a plugin that integrates with WPML 🙂
