Moving our license key to our new development site

Hi there,

We recently set up a dev/test site version of our main site, and I saw an old support post (https://eventespresso.com/topic/site-license-question-problem) in which you recommended that the license key be moved to a dev version if there is one, for testing prior to making the updates live. Can we please do that too? It sounds as though you would need to reset our license key so we can move it from the live version to the dev version, is that right?

One of the reasons I’m asking is because I can see an automatic update is available. I just tried to manually update on the dev site and got the error message “Updating Plugin Event Espresso (1/1)
An error occurred while updating Event Espresso: Update package not available.”

Is this likely to happen on the live site if there’s no license key?

It sounds as though you would need to reset our license key so we can move it from the live version to the dev version, is that right?

The license key is valid for a single site, so if its currently active on the ‘live’ site and you want to move it to the ‘dev’ site then yes it will need to be reset. However doing so will also prevent the ‘live’ site from having the one click updates it has now, so you’ll need to manually update on the live site unless you have a method to push changes from dev to live?

I just tried to manually update on the dev site and got the error message “Updating Plugin Event Espresso (1/1)
An error occurred while updating Event Espresso: Update package not available.”

That’s from a manual update where you removed the previous version and then manually uploaded the new one using Dashboard -> Plugins -> Add new -> Upload plugin?
