Hello, since upgrading to version 4.4.4p from 4.4.3p, I’ve noticed this message –

Event Espresso recommends PHP version 5.4.33 or greater in order for everything to operate properly. You are currently running version 5.4.26.

Exactly what is ‘for everything to operate properly. Shouldn’t everything operate properly on the basis of the lowest supported PHP version?

Since the announcement of version 4, the PHP requirement has been bumped to version 5.3, and that is understandable.

But should non-milestone updates be bumping up minimum php versions as well?

What happens to customers who’ve on your advice moved to non 5.2 servers, and are they now supposed to just shift off their 5.3 into 5.4?

How often is the PHP requirement gonna be bumped up?

Are site owners going to have to expect to contact their host or even move hosts everytime a minor update comes up? Besides, shouldn’t 4.4.x be bug or security fixes? Why would such an update require a PHP version bump?

It looks really ridiculous to me that a bug fix update would essentially be denied to people who likely by requirement went from 5.2 to 5.3+

If 5.3.9 was the intended minimum in the first place, couldn’t this have been done so since the start?

Hi Jon,

The minimum required version of PHP has not been altered with version 4.4.4.p, as of EE4.4+ the mimimum required version is 5.3.0, all functions within EE should work with this version. However it is also expected that your host would have applied the latest security updates to the server and so be running 5.3.29, if not I would recommend contacting your host to have them update, security updates should not be skipped.

The problem is the 5.3.x is now end of life (see here and here) and as such we have set the minimum recommended PHP version to 5.4.xx (xx being the latest version at the time)

There has been a long standing battle with developers to try and push for hosts to update their servers and move away from 5.2, it is likely the same will happen for 5.3 and so on.

Currently we still support PHP 5.3 but advise users to update to 5.4+

If you prefer not to do so, you can simply dismiss the message.
