Hi,

I am wondering if Event Espresso offer a service to migrate Event Espresso from our current website which is still active to our new website which is still in developer mode. I have read the forum discussions around the topic but I am afraid being new to Event Espresso, the information does make much sense to me. What is your advice, please?

Thanks

Sabine

Hi Sabine,

Ok, so before going into detail on this let’s grab some info.

Is the current site the one linked to your license? If so, it’s currently running EE3, right?

Is the new site going to be running EE3 or EE4?

Does the site have current, active events that are being transferred over or is this mainly to keep historical data?

Hi, yes, the current site is the one linked to our license and it is currently running on EE3. We would probably look to migrate the information across to the new website and run EE3 and then look to upgrade.
Yes, the old site does have active workshop events (and historical) data that would need to be moved over.

Ok, so an EE3 migration from one site to another is generally fairly simple to do if you are used to moving database tables around?

The simple and clean way to do the transfer is outlined in the following steps. When you’re ready to shut down the old site:

1) backup the database on the new site
2) deactivate EE3 on the old site or put the site into maintenance mode to prevent any further registrations on the old site
3) backup the database on the old site
4) take the tables from old site that have the prefix _events_ and import them into the new site
5) Install and activate the Event Espresso 3 plugin on the new site
6) At this point all of the events/registrations will be on the new site, but you’ll need to reapply any settings to the new site. (Organization settings etc)

Yes, the old site does have active workshop events (and historical) data that would need to be moved over.

This may be where you start to run into issues if you are running both sites at the same time you’re going to need to re-migrate the data over.

Is the dev site ready to go live? If not, do you need the data migrated over right now?

Hi, thanks for the information. Our developers have noticed that there is a built in feature to export and import the data (Import events and Export all Event Data. Would this work on in this instance? How would this work? Would this be a better option? Does EventExpresso offer their own migration service?

Hi there,

The export/import feature wasn’t intended as a method to move all events (and related data) from one site to another, it was designed as a way to quickly import multiple events at once from a spreadsheet.

Does EventExpresso offer their own migration service?

We do not offer a specific migration service currently but we can do it via a support token:

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. Just to understand how the support token would work. Am I right in thinking that we would simply get 30 minutes of one-to-one time with a member of the support team at a scheduled time to talk us through it or would support actually undertake the steps for us?

It would be me working on this and in this instance and I can move the tables from one database to the other if that is what you want me to, as long as I have enough access to do so.

You will need to create a full database backup for both sites before proceeding (sometimes the backup can take a while) but other than that I can do the steps listed above for you.
