Hi,
Have been having issues with messages sending. Last month I noticed messages stopped sending, they were stuck in ‘Queued For Generating’. Tried to do send now, nothing moved them. I cleared them all out (deleted them) and then messages started sending again.
A couple weeks later, exact same problem.
I setup a Pepipost account and installed their plugin. I am able to send messages from their test message area. I did not do anything else for setup, did I need to change anything in EE?
Now when messages send I get a failed error:

Message was not executed successfully.
Messenger and Message Type were valid and active, but the messenger send method failed.
The email did not send successfully.
The WordPress wp_mail function is used for sending mails but does not give any useful information when an email fails to send.
It is possible the “to” address (xxxx@xxx.com) or “from” address (xxxx@xxxx.xom) is invalid.

I have checked the emails listed 4 times and they are valid.
I also tried switching from ‘on separate request’ to ‘on same request’ but I get the same error.

Any help/ideas on how to resolve would be appreciated!

Thank you,
Justin

Hi Justin,

The first step would be make sure the From: address used in the EE messages is the same email address used by the email sent from the test message area.

Hi Josh,
Yes, both match. There have been 3 sends since my submission here (I have not made any changes from what I said above). 2 went out, 1 failed. The one that failed had the same message as the one above. Interestingly, one of the two that succeeded was to the person that failed. One message was the Payment Received (failed) and one was the Registration Approved (sent).

Thanks,
Justin

Hi,

May I ask what’s in the To: field of the Payment Received email template for the Primary Registrant context?

This is in the To: field for the Payment Received Primary Registrant:
[PRIMARY_REGISTRANT_EMAIL]

I should note that all these messages templates worked for a few months. They have not been changed recently, if that helps.

We’ve had some more registration so more messages go out. Some pass, some fail. No pattern to what fails and what sends (ie all templates seem to fail or send equally), so I assume it is something besides the template?

Some messages using the exact same template fail and others do not?

The error is being thrown by wp_mail() which basically means, EE generated the email, set everything up and passed it over to the WordPress function wp_mail(), which does some additional checks and formatting if needed, then passes the email to your server to do whatever it is setup to do, its at that point EE is getting ‘fasle’ returned, meaning something failed.

Are you using an SMTP plugin on the site or just your hosts mailserver?

Some messages using the exact same template fail and others do not?
Correct

Originally was just using the hosts mailserver (default settings, hosting is WP Engine). After experiencing the problems noted on the first post in this thread, ie messages getting stuck in ‘Queued For Generating’ two separate times for over a week, I switched yesterday to Pepipost. After that switch is where I am now getting some fail and some send.
I’m happy to go with a different configuration if there is a better one, just want it to work

Thank you,
Justin

The failures seem to be out numbering. 14 emails have been attempted since the switch and only 4 were successful.

Some messages using the exact same template fail and others do not?
Correct

Problem is that if it’s working for some but not others (and combined with the error you are getting) it likely means as far as EE is concerned, everything is working, it’s after the email has been passed over to WP.

Can you see the failed messages in your Pepipost dashboard at all?

If you check your servers error log, do you see anything there related to mail? (Or Event Espresso)

I’m assuming you’ve run through all of the steps to verify your account, sender domain etc in PepiPost?
