Hello,
Our EE4 license key has been used on our development site which has been in production for quite some time. We are finally within 2 weeks of making this site live as our primary site.

We have a few questions and want to know what you recommend regarding steps involved in making the switch (so we don’t goof this up):

1) Should we request the license key reset from the account page to the live site url AFTER the development/staging site becomes live? (assuming yes, but…)
2) Do we include https:// in in the “Active On” website assignment or would we just indicate the main part of the url (without the http(s) and www included)?
3) Are there any other things that we need to be aware of to change or correct in WP or EE settings to make sure the EE install will still behave when the site switches over?

4) Once we switch over the license key to the live site url, will it cover all the add-ons as well (so they will still have the capacity to auto-update as they do now?)

5) If we maintain a staging area (we are on Siteground), will the license key have any effect on functionality if we are testing updates for EE in the staging area before we make the updates on the live site?

Thanks for your help,

Gilda

You can take the license key off the development site now, we advise to not use the license key on a development site. The key has no affect on the functionality of the software. The key only affects the ability to do 1-click updates for the core plugin and the add-ons.

2) Do we include https:// in in the “Active On” website assignment or would we just indicate the main part of the url (without the http(s) and www included)?

You actually don’t indicate a URL. The site with the license key will ping our servers and identify itself.

3) Are there any other things that we need to be aware of to change or correct in WP or EE settings to make sure the EE install will still behave when the site switches over?

If you’re moving data from staging to live, you’ll need to be sure to migrate the data correctly by using a script like WP Migrate DB.

4) Once we switch over the license key to the live site url, will it cover all the add-ons as well (so they will still have the capacity to auto-update as they do now?)

You’ll need to reset your key from your account page before you put the key on the live site. If your account has access to add-ons, yes, the key will cover the add-ons.

5) If we maintain a staging area (we are on Siteground), will the license key have any effect on functionality if we are testing updates for EE in the staging area before we make the updates on the live site?

No effect on functionality.
