1. We manually updated to – 4.2.3.reg because the autoupdate wouldn’t work due to a license key issue. We have the correct license key installed. Please advise.

2. We have a Event Expresso/General Settings AND A Event Expresso/Settings tab in WP Admin. The settings tab is blank. Suspect a database issue when upgrading. Please detail a fix for this.

Hello,

Do you remember what version you were running prior to the update?

Also, when you manually updated — did you remove or relocate the old plugin folder or did you overwrite the old files?

3. When I send a test message to my email in the message area, we get:

An error has occurred:
The test message was not sent

Hello,

Your install may not have completed correctly. Also, addons for Event Espresso 3 are not compatible with version 4. If those are activated, please do deactivate them.

Then follow the steps below to reinstall your software.

Begin by backing up your WordPress:

https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups

Next, download the latest version of your Event Espresso software from your account:

https://eventespresso.com/users/clickitevents/

Now login to your WordPress admin and go to Plugins. Locate Event Espresso in the list of plugins and deactivate it.

Next login to your WordPress root with an SFTP or FTP client (FileZilla and Cyberduck are free options). Then browse to the WordPress plugins folder: wp-content/plugins

Locate the Event Espresso folder and relocate it one level above the WordPress plugins folder and add old to the end of the folder name: wp-content/event-espresso-old

Return to the Plugins screen in the WordPress admin and click on Add New –> Upload. Then browse to the zip file that you downloaded from your account. Select it and begin the upload process.

You can activate Event Espresso after it has finished.

Are you using a plugin like WP mail smtp to send out the test message? The first thing to check is to make sure there is only one email address set in Event Espresso > General Settings > Contact email.

WP-mail-smtp is setup correct and test email via plugin works. forgot password email works. EE Contact email is set correctly, just one email, and it is the same as admin email.

Hello,

Are you still seeing the duplicate settings menu for Event Espresso?

No duplicate settings now, plugin sub-links look formatted properly now as well. Still no messages though.

Is this error still appearing:

The test message was not sent

What if you enter in an alternate email address in the test field?

Tried 4 different emails, message the same on all of them. No emails are going out from the plugin anywhere it seems. We expected this to be working out of the box when we purchased a developers license.

Hi there,

There’s a plugin you can install that’s called Email log which you can run in the background to see if the email functions are hitting the email server. It may be a case where the emails are getting sent out, but something along the route is rejecting the email.

Another thing you can try is the to and from fields from their formatted versions to their non-formatted versions. For example, if the From field is [EVENT_AUTHOR_FORMATTED_EMAIL], you could change it to: [EVENT_AUTHOR_EMAIL]

emails are being logged by the Email Log plugin, but are not going out from event expresso. And EE4 is displaying the Error Message.

I receive the same error if I Send all WordPress emails via SMTP OR
Use the PHP mail() function to send emails.

Please advise a fix.

Hi there,

We might be able to advise a fix if you can let us know what that error message was.

If that’s not possible, you might try a third party service like Mandrill.

The error message as I stated is the EE4 generated message:

An error has occurred:
The test message was not sent

All mail is being sent out SMTP – domain authenticated via Amazon SES
