The limit field on each datetime/ticket is basically the number of spaces/tickets available, setting that to 1 means you have just 1 space/ticket to sell.
If you edit the and look in the ‘Event Registration Options’ within the sidebar you’ll see the option ‘Maximum number of tickets allowed per order for this event’, see here:
Now visitors can only select 1 ticket for the event at a time.
