Hi There

Suddenly our events are not continuing through the registration process. It gets stuck on this page:
https://theconduitcenter.com/registration-checkout/?uts=1507052923#checkout

I navigate to one of our events and just try to register for a free “RSVP” spot. (you can test this if you like) and when I do that on the check out page it will not submit to next page.

The error that pops up is this:
An invalid response was returned from your server. Refresh page or please contact support.

What’s strange is, I can tell on the back-end that my registration went through. It just wont navigate to go to the next page and show confirmation etc.

I tried disabling all plug-ins and just do one at a time with espresso only activated. I searched on google and only found possibly it’s an SSL issue so I went through this Espresso SSL instructions and tried setting that up:
https://eventespresso.com/wiki/espresso-sslhttps/

I’m just not having any luck, and our customers are unable to complete any transaction.

Again, we were working fine and I think an espresso update may have happened or some other update.

Can you help me see if it’s an SSL issue or what is going on?

Thanks so much!

Jeff N

Hi Jeff,

There is an error being thrown by your server on the request made by EE to finalize the registration.

Do you have access to the servers error logs? If so take a look within that to see what the error is and post it here.

If not you can add this snippet: https://gist.github.com/Pebblo/8787f5530ea777c84aaf62f075e55b32

To your wp-config.php to enable error logging on the site, then we can see what is happening and advise from there.

Thanks Tony!

I went through the painful but important step to disable all plug-ins and walk through enabling each one. I realized I hadn’t fully finished this step. I went through enabling each plug-in and then trying the registration after each plug-in enabled. I’m not sure why, but it appears the G-MAIL SMTP Plug-in in the wordpress repository I was using caused the fatal error.

This is the plug-in I disabled and registration started working:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/gmail-smtp/

I don’t understand why.. but it is working now. One thing I noticed is that this GMAIL SMTP plug-in required 5.6 and I am running 5.4.

The message said “The minimum PHP version required for this plugin is 5.6.0. You are running 5.4.45.”

Do you think I should upgrade my PHP version at some point? What is recommended?

Thanks for the debugging snippet code too I will try that in the future.

Sincerely,

Jeff N

Hi Jeff,

It’s definitely recommended to get PHP updated. This is because version 5.4 is no longer getting security updates/patches. It’s recommended to update to at least version 5.6, and if you can get your host to update to 7.0 you’ll notice a nice performance upgrade on your website. You can find out more about PHP versions and what’s still supported here:
