The Groupon code option doesnt really make sense. Most companies have different priced events and a groupon could be one price one time and another price another. If an event is $50 and they buy a $25 Groupon, the system needs to know it is a $25 or a $50 to deduct from the cost and the customer will pay the difference. Right now it takes 100% off. This doesnt make sense. So if they register for a $100 class and purchase a $25 Groupon, they get the class for the $25.

Hi Dorian,

This all depends on how the Groupon promotion is setup.

Generally if you price the class as $25, Groupon would sell the Groupon codes for this price and then to allow people to book onto the class and reserve their place they would input the Groupon code into Event Espresso which makes the event free and you then claim the monies for that code from Groupon.

In your above example, they would actually be purchasing the class at $50. Or more specifically $25 twice, once from Groupon, and then once from yourself when booking the class.

Two important things to note when using Groupon, they charge commission on the sales (usually around 30%) so you may need to adjust your Groupon sale price to accommodate and secondly to claim monies from a Groupon code you need the ‘Security Code’ that is given only to the customer, I would recommend adding a custom question to your registration form to capture this on registration.

That is all fine and good if every class was $25. They have classes with various prices so that will not work.

Easy solution: All you would have to do with your groupon plugin is make it work like the promo code one. The difference being you can enter the Groupon code so it can be deactivated in the backend just as it does now.

That is all fine and good if every class was $25. They have classes with various prices so that will not work.

So to clarify you would like to use Groupon to sell multiple fixed value Groupon Codes for various classes which once purchased would allow a user to buy the event/class through Event Espresso for a reduced value?

If that is the case this is something that the Groupon Add-on is simply not designed to do. It is designed to be used for Groupon Promotions in which the event is purchased through Groupon and then the attendee needs reserve a space within that Event, as such the Groupon codes makes the event ‘free’ once entered (as they have already purchased the Groupon).

Easy solution: All you would have to do with your groupon plugin is make it work like the promo code one. The difference being you can enter the Groupon code so it can be deactivated in the backend just as it does now.

Unfortunately this would require significant re-factoring to both the Groupon Add-on and the way EE3 handles the Groupon codes so is not a simple solution currently.

I will add this to our internal feature request list for consideration in future versions of Event Espresso but can not comment on if, or when this will be included within the Groupon Add-on

No…. If they purchase a Groupon from Groupon’s site for $25. That $25 should be able to be used for any class available on the calendar. The class could be $25, $35, $50, etc… Your Groupon plugin does not know the value of the Groupon purchased. My customer runs different Groupons at different prices and not all of the classes are the same price. The plugin just needs to act like the promo code just adding a value to the code she assigns for the Groupon code:

Example:

She sells a Groupon for $25. Her code for everyone is GROUPON25.

Your Groupon plugin takes the Groupon code itself and deactivates it. If you could also add where they add the GROPON25 in another field then add a value to it just like the Promo code works that would solve it. Then they woiuld just pay the difference if the class was more. I hope that makes sense. Or even adding another field to the Promo code asking to enter their Groupon code if they have one.

I see, thank you for explaining.

Whilst not ideal this is currently possible with the current version of Event Espresso using Promo codes and a custom question within the registration form.

You could setup a Promo code of GROUPON25 (and others for the other Groupon codes) and then add a custom question to the registration form requesting the Groupon Code. The customer will receive whichever discount specified for the Promo code and you also capture the Groupon to claim monies back for the attendee.

Does that help?

I will add the feedback you provided to the feature request ticket.
