Encountering a “fatal error” message when trying to save changes to events. Saving changes to standard posts and pages does not result in an error.

Here’s the error message:
There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.

I have tried deactivating plugins and it has not resolved the issue.

Running the latest version of WordPress.

Help please!

Hi there,

Which host are you using, please?

Within your events do you have revisions enabled? (EE disables them by default but we are seeing hosts force them to be enabled which has results in fatal errors on save so I’m wondering if this is your issue here)

The above error is the ‘front facing’ error it’s the same for pretty much every fatal error thrown and is the ‘pretty’ error.

If you check the server’s error logs can you see an error thrown around the time the above is shown?

Hi Tony,

We’re hosted on GoDaddy.

I don’t recall changing any settings regarding revisions. Can you point me to the location where I would doublecheck that setting? Looked in Event Espresso > General Settings and didn’t see anything there that looked related.

In regards to server logs, I’m not seeing anything that references errors related to the domain event espresso is installed on. Is there a debug or logging option I need to enable within the product settings?

You may not have changed anything, we’ve just noticed a recent uptick in these types of reports and can only narrow it down to revisions currently.

There isn’t a setting for it.

Edit your event and look for anything on that page related to ‘revision’. In the ‘Update event’ metabox, do you see any links for ‘revisions’?

No, the error you are getting will be from a PHP Fatal error, those are usually stored within the server’s PHP error logs. Plugins generally don’t have the option to enable/disable error logging as it’s a server setting rather than something you ‘should’ be controlling through a plugin.

Hi Tony,

I don’t see anything regarding revisions on the edit event screen. Please see screen recording here in case I’ve missed something:

I’ve tried locating PHP error logs in GoDaddy’s Cpanel admin and am unable to find them.

Hmm, yeah, not related to revisions as far as I can tell.

Mind if I take a look? I’ll need to add debug code to the site to help figure this out so need WP-Admin and FTP credentials which you can send over using this form:

Hi Steph,

I need FTP/File Manager access for this one as I need to add some code onto the site to see what is happening, do you have those credentials?

Just submitted another form with what I think you need. Please let me know if the permissions aren’t right and I can try to update!

Tony – Just FYI. Saw the new plugin version available today and went ahead and updated. Also completed the db update portion. It does not appear to have resolved the issue with saving changes to events.

Hi Steph,

My apologies for the delay.

Turns out this isn’t actually an issue from the update itself, your site was running out of memory when attempting to update the events. The new editor likely uses more memory when processing the request which then meant it tipped over the limit set on your server so I’ve upped the WP_MEMORY_LIMIT value set on the site using:

define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );

Within wp-config.php and the events now save.

Hi Tony,

Is the support forum broken? Have tried opening a new topic 4 times today and it doesn’t seem to save. Never receive an email confirmation.

Thanks,
Stephanie
