I was hoping to be able to set up events to be searchable by custom parameters like age, grade level, zip code, etc. I saw that the event create screen has tags, but these do not seem to come up using a search by tag plugin. Are the tags broken on events? Is there a way to enable users to search on tags or custom taxonomies, or do I need to put the variables in the event description and hope the results aren’t too messy?

Hi,
Are you using the default WP Search to find events? I’d recommend starting with the Relevanssi plugin and see where that gets you. https://wordpress.org/plugins/relevanssi/

I’d also recommend using Advanced Custom Fields to add all your meta data: https://wordpress.org/plugins/advanced-custom-fields/

Tags are not broken on events, but your search by tag plugin might not include searching through other post types like events and venues. One option you could use is Relevannsi + Advanced Custom Fields. If you can let us know which search by tag plugin you’re trying, we can take a look at its code to see if it searches through custom post types for tags or not, and whether that could be changed.

Thanks! I had been testing various search plugins, but Relevannsi seems to have the granular options needed. Great search plugin! It seems to be working for what I need now, but will try using advanced custom fields if I run into problems.

Even if you don’t run into any trouble the Advanced Custom Fields is a really nice way to add nice looking custom meta data fields to the event editor, and using custom fields will likely work out better than using a single taxonomy like tags.
