Recently purchased event espresso, and have had my site shut down off and on all day. When I install and activate, it takes me first to a maintenance mode and asks that I update my tables. Everytime it does so it shuts down the whole site.
Also, while I have event espresso active It gives me an error whenever I try to access my wordpress dashboard.
Can you check the error log file on the server to find the actual fatal error? The actual fatal error will tell us what needs to be done next to address this. Also, if the server is running PHP 5.3 or lower you’ll need to contact your host and ask them to upgrade the server to use PHP 5.4 or greater.
When I try to just install the decaf version from the plugin directory, I receive the following message:
Installation failed: Could not copy file. event-espresso-decaf/core/third_party_libs/cssinliner/vendor/symfony/css-selector/Symfony/Component/CssSelector/XPath/Extension/AttributeMatchingExtension.php

As well, when I try to access my wordpress dashboard, only this shows up:
As well, when I try to perform the database update, it first of all asks me to update event espresso to 4.9.0, even though I’m using the version that is provided.
It appears your host has set the database permissions to not allow your database user to create new tables. They’ll need to allow creating new tables before you can use EE4 on your server.
In any case, if you go to the Event Espresso > Maintenance > Reset page there’s an option there to reset and delete all of the tables. Somewhere along the way there’s an option that got written to the wp_options table that is saying that the EE database tables have been created, but they clearly haven’t been created yet.
We currently have the events calendar active on our site – do you think maybe it could be in conflict with event espresso? Have there been issues reported with that plugin?

I actually have The Events Calendar plugin activated on my site along with Event Espresso, and I don’t see any issues there.
