The server was acting as a gateway or proxy and received an invalid response from the upstream server.
The curious thing is that users who are administrators can log in, which makes me think the routing is good. It’s just people with limited permissions. We had permissions for this user set and working, but they no longer appear to do so. I also tried giving the user every single ee_* permission in their role just to see if that fixed the issue but it didn’t.
On further investigation, an admin could log in with his credentials on Android, but not on an iOS device with the same credentials. Maybe something related to the 2.4 version of the app on iOS?
The only time I’ve seen the error that says
“The server was acting as a gateway or proxy and received an invalid response from the upstream server.”
is because I had the wrong URL set in the Website URL field. So they should double-check what’s input into the site url field there.
