When I stated that I did not change anything on the website, I must correct that: some other (non-EE) plugins got updated. I have now established that the problem relates to an update of the Restrict User Access plugin to version 0.12.3.
Going back to a previous version of RUA (0.12.1) resolved my issue. I report this here because maybe some other users of EE will experience the same issue.
I will contact the owner of Restrict User Access to find a more permanent solution.
You might find that the problem isn’t anything the Restrict User Access plugin is doing. Sometimes what can happen is if your server is near the brink of its memory limit, then deactivating a plugin (even temporarily) will free up enough memory to keep going without errors for awhile. You can check your PHP error logs to see if there are any “Fatal Error…allowed memory size…exhausted” type errors there. If you find them, then your solution is bump up the server’s memory limit.
