Email Not Sending to Some Event Attendees

When people register for events, emails are not sending to all attendees. Some are working fine, but I have had several contacts over the last few days (dozens since adding EE as my registration system) tell me that the emails are not showing up.

Per a suggestion from an email from Josh on your support team, I added the email log plugin to track what has been sent. I have confirmed that yesterday someone registered for an event and the email did not send from WordPress.

Hi Eric,

Did the error log indicate why the email wasn’t sent out? If it’s a case where the email didn’t fire, then it may be they didn’t complete the registration. If it’s a registration for a free event, the emails will go out when they hit the Thank You page. If it’s a paid event, it can depend on what’s set in Event Espresso > General settings (send out confirmations before payment is made).

Where can I get into the error log? All of my events are 100% free, so it shouldn’t relate to payment.

If you enable ‘full logging’ in EE->general settings, then you will start getting entries in uploads/espresso/logs/espresso_log.txt. It should include the function calls that get made when the email gets triggered and that may help narrow down the problem.

I just activated the logging. Is this something you are familiar with and have any suggestions to fix without waiting for the problem to happen again?

Usually it is caused by the email ending up in the spam folder. It could also be that the user is not hitting the confirm button and going to the payment page.

I verified with the users that the messages were not in spam or one of the promotions tabs, etc.

Is there a way to completely 100% turn off anything relating to payments? We never charge and just use this tool to collect email addresses (MailChimp) and send out event information as people register, and occasionally send out event updates. That is really all we care about at DenverFlashMob.com.

Eric,

If all your events are free, then the payment options don’t display on the front end. The email log plugin should have a log of each attempt at an email with error messages if there’s a failure.

The email log didn’t show a failed email attempt for the ones that didn’t go out, so the issue is coming before WordPress attempts to send the email.

Can you find that user’s entries in the uploads/espresso/logs/espresso_log.txt file? There should be an entry listing the request variables for each page load followed by calls to various functions. The includes/functions/email.php has several logging points. I know one is in the send mail function.

That’s the loading of the confirmation page, where the registration form is submitted to. There should be a corresponding entry right after that where they submit the confirmation page and the payment page is loaded. In the VARS section, you’ll see “confirm = Confirm Registration »”. That’s the page that sends out the confirmation email for free events, so there should be several entries in there that look like
[some timestamp] email.php -> some function name

The user probably got to the confirmation page and assumed they were done. They might not have hit the “Confirm Registration” button and gone to the payment page, where the email is sent out. I know with the default WP theme the confirm button is grey with white text on a white background, so it is not very prominent. You might want to play with the CSS to make it stand out more, or put some text in the confirmation_display.php template to hint to users they need to hit that button to finalize their registration.

Are we able to turn off the confirmation step for signups to make it more simple and streamlined for users?

There is an option for that in EE->General Settings->Advanced Features->Optional Event Settings->”Skip Confirmation Page during Registration Process?”.

Price: $0.00

Is there anyway to completely hide the price, as all events are always free?
