Hi,

I was wondering…is it possible to use emails created in mail chimp’s campaign builder instead of the EE email messages automatically sent when one registers?

If so, how do I do this?

Hi Cindra,

MailChimp is used to send email to a list of users within a ‘campaign’.

You can not use MailChimp to send transnational emails such as emails sent by EE.

Can I ask why you want to use those emails?

I am able to design the look of an email with a lot more ease on Mail Chimp. I was hoping that I could use the code from mail chimp and put it into EE.

Hi Cindra,

Are you meaning copying the HTML elements from MailChimp? You could do that since the messages in EE4 are in HTML. However, it may take some extra work to get them to look like they do in MailChimp. You will need to add the email tags and such.

Yes. I mean design something in mail chimp…then export the HTML. Then either import or paste the HTML in EE.

By email tags do you mean the short codes that EE uses to pull certain information from the registration forms into the emails?

Ah sorry I thought you meant send the emails through mailchimp, my apologies.

However I can tell you that this will require more just copying over the template into the messages within EE. The CSS for the email will need stepping out and replaced, the structure can mostly be done from within the admin but some not.

You’ll need to create a new message template and variation that match your mailchimp setup. It won’t be easy or simple to do without coding knowledge and you may find that it takes longer to do that than building up complete custom templates from scratch (done in the same way without needing to figure out what’s going on with the mail chimp template code in the first place).

So yes it’s possible, but it won’t be nice task.

Ok. But wouldn’t I need to know how to code in order to “build up complete custom templates from scratch”?

Yeah, I suppose so.

However to try and explain a little, if you build out a template within MailChimp and grab the source code, your going to need to reverse engineer that source code to then break it down into sections that you can use within EE.

HTML emails use inline styles so when sending an email you need to build out the inline styles that apply to the elements, EE does this on the fly for you taking ‘standard’ CSS and applying it to the elements within the email as the email is generated.

So to do this properly you need to build out the HTML within template pack, strip out most of the CSS from the source and create a css file to place within a EE message variation that then applies to that template and EE will build out the template and apply the inline styles needed.

In both cases you’ll need HTML and CSS knowledge to build out the templates and PHP (and EE) knowledge to build out the template pack and variation to go with it. However if creating your own template you start from scratch you then don’t need to reverse engineer the MailChimp template, figure out what styles should be applied to each element, strip those styles from the template, build out CSS to match the inline styles for EE to build. You build a new template applying the styles needed as you go the difference between those can be significant if working with complex templates.

Oh man! This is going WAY over my head. I think I will wait to see if I really want this. And if so, maybe I will get the help of a professional. Thanks!
