I have followed your instructions for translating EE4 (Version 4.9.38.p) and have the files event_espresso-de_DE.mo and event_espresso-de_DE.po in the directory wp-content/uploads/espresso/languages and also in wp-content/plugins/event-espresso-core-reg/languages. My WP is set to German and shows the main menus in German, but the EE menus and the texts on the pages are in English. What is wrong?

Hi there,

wp-content/uploads/espresso/languages

This is the correct location to place the MO file (the file is the file used to translate the PO file is the human readable version)

wp-content/plugins/event-espresso-core-reg/languages

Please do not place any files within the plugin, those files will be removed on each update so you should not modify/place any files within that location.

Are you generating the MO file yourself using POEdit or downloading the MO from Glotpress directly?

I took the German EE files and made a few changes with poedit.

Where did you take the files from?

That was some time ago. I don’t remember. But they include German translations of many of the texts.

From where should I take them?

It could be that your PO/MO files are very outdated.

Try downloading this file:

https://translate.eventespresso.com/projects/event-espresso-4/de/event-espresso-de_DE/export-translations?format=mo

Rename the file to event_espresso-de_DE.mo and place it within:

/wp-content/uploads/espresso/languages/

If there are any other MO files with the same name, rename them so the above is used.

The above is to confirm if your site can actually read the MO file from uploads.

From where should I take them?

If you are following the guide for translations and using POEdit:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/how-to-translate-event-espresso/#translate-with-poedit

It directs you to use the PO file from our Glotpress project:

https://translate.eventespresso.com/projects/event-espresso-4/de/event-espresso-de_DE

You ‘export’ to PO file at the bottom of the page, rename it to the correct filename and then use POEdit to add translations and create a MO file.

That is now working! PTL!

So it’s likely your PO/MO files are very outdated.

Our GlotPRess project is the best place to keep up to date with the latest strings.

The instructions I posted above will allow you to grab the PO file you can use for custom translations. As we add new strings and update EE you will need to merge those changes into your custom PO file, there are instructions for that here:

http://www.marketpressthemes.com/blog/how-to-merge-two-po-files-using-poedit/

Your explanation sound plausible, Tony, since the translation had been working and I had not accessed the site for a couple of months.
I’ll try to merge…

Merge seems to have worked
