EE4 – Event page to Registration page is slow to load

My client is making a decision between using EE4 and “another event software”. This one thing that is making them lean more towards the “other” choice is speed. The problem on the EE4 side is this: From our event page to the registration page (after they click Buy Tickets) it takes 5-7 seconds to come up vs only taking 1-2 seconds with the “other” software. We disabled all plugins except EE plugins and the page itself has minimal info on it. Tried W3 Total Cache, WP Super Cache, but nothing speeds it up. What can we do to speed up this process? Get a dedicated server? Use other caching methods? Add more memory to existing server? – Also since I am the host provider as well I have more flexibility to try things. The current server has only about 30 shared clients on it currently, and is a Intel Xeon CPU X3440 @ 2.53GHz w/ 8g RAM. I just want all the options put on the table that would potentially speed this up. I also currently have 128m of memory dedicated to WordPress (in the wp-config.php file) right now and the ‘Requirements’ plugin says it’s only using 68m. Any help would be appreciated to give me more speed on this thing.

To reproduce the problem simply go here:
http://datenightcomedytour.com/tourdates/simulcast-friday-october-21/
and then choose some tickets and click “Buy Tickets”. After you click this button it takes about 5-7 seconds to load the registration page. From the clients pov this needs to be more like 1-2 seconds.

Please help.
Eli

It’s only taking about less than one second when I try it.

Josh, are you sure? Everytime I go to the event page and then click the button to Buy Tickets it takes 5-6 seconds (sometimes 7). I just did it again. I also just enabled gzip compression which got the gtmetrix up from an F to a D. Still takes about 5 seconds to load though. Can you confirm on your end and please advise?

The only part of your site that seems slow is the part where it’s loading all of those scripts, requests for video playback, and requests to Facebook via the widget there. The page that loads up after the Ticket Selector loads up is much quicker than the page where the Ticket Selector form is on.

Maybe I’m not being clear. When you click on this page:
http://datenightcomedytour.com/tourdates/simulcast-friday-october-21/
and then click the “Buy Tickets” button.
The time it take from the moment you click the button to when the Registration page comes up takes 5-6 (sometimes 7) seconds. I’m not talking about the time it takes to load the page. Make sense?

No, how would the time it takes to load a page not be a factor? When you click the button, it does load up another page after it processes the ticket selections.

When I click the Buy tickets button it keeps me on the same page for about 5 seconds before loading the registration page to fill out contact info. Is this what you get?

Sure, however the time it takes includes loading up the next page. You can have a look on my test server and see that it’s much faster when it’s loading up fewer assets:

Josh, yes when I go to your test server and Register for Jurassic 5 it load FAST! Mine does not. Any suggestions on how I can make it load like yours?

We’re not doing anything special on that server. It’s a digital ocean droplet running Nginx on Ubuntu. We do keep those sites very simple with only a few plugins and themes that load fewer resources.

Josh, we’re thinking of putting the site on a very fast dedicated server w/ 16g ram. Do you think this would help and/or dramatically speed up the process?

It’d probably help things. Other factors that contribute to slowness include the other plugins and theme that are activated on the website.

It’s a Digital Ocean droplet running Nginx on Ubuntu. If you prefer that someone else run updates on the server, you can also check out serverpilot.io. That’s a service that makes it easier to run websites on DigitalOcean.

Josh, what setup do you have? I’m at Digital Ocean now. What do you recommend in terms of memory, processor, disk, and transfer? Here is the screenshot. Which one would make our site the fastest for EE4?

^ Also remember we want to have add the promotions, ticketing, and barcode plugins AND still maintain the kind of speed that your test site gets. thanks for your help on this. I look forward to your reply.

The test site usually has most of the add-ons running at any given time, since it’s used for testing. That particular site is on a server that’s on the $20/month plan.
