Installed the plugin.

Went to maintenaince and ran the db upgrade script.

It got stuck at 101/165 (approximately).

Kept saying 0 records upgraded. Forever.

I finally refreshed page. (I did a backup of db before running upgrade script).

But, it still wants to finish running upgrade and it can’t because of a buggy script and it’s stuck.

My only recourse was to disable the plugin.

Looking for suggestions for a fix.

HATE IT when you guys don’t test your stuff and especially upgrade scripts for the database flake out.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Hi Paul,

I want to let you know that myself and other EE staff members tested the update script several times using several testing scenarios. Please do not accuse us of not testing. We tested it, confirmed it worked well, and other folks have reported having success with this update.

With that out of the way, I can try to help you with this.

Before you go to run the update again, can you first deactivate all other plugins besides EE and the WP User Integration? This will free up some memory on your server and allow the migration to continue.

If the above does not help, please fill out this form completely and someone from support staff can investigate.

I do believe it was tested. It just obviously wasn’t tested enough.

I used to work in software development and understand the challenges of software testing. That being said this is the second time I’ve had a problem with a db upgrade script. And, it’s frustrating. Extremely.

I think it is also important to understand what it is like for the end user when an event like this happens and their entire registration system is down. Very scary because even with a db backup, restoring a large db is far from trivial.

I will do as you suggest tomorrow morning and report the results.

Paul

Hi Paul,

I can advise that you please consider setting up a staging environment as a place to test updates before pushing them to staging. We cannot test your specific environment before each time we do an update. You can, however, and doing so will eliminate your frustration.

It turns out that we are end users of Event Espresso too. Since Event Smart is a mission critical installation for us, we have a separate staging environment that we use to test all updates and changes first before pushing them to a live server.

Some of the hosts that are optimized for WordPress like WPEngine offer a 1-click staging feature that makes it easy to test on a staging server first.

Hi Paul, Josh,

I appear to have suffered from the exact same issue, migration bar was stuck at 65% (188/288). I tried deactivating all plugins besides Event Espresso and the WP User Plugin but it was still stuck. In the end I resorted to deactivating the WP Users Plugin entirely as it wasn’t really be utilised on the website anyway. Not much help to those who suffer the same issue and are using the plugin though…

Hi Jonathan and Paul,

We just finished up with an update to WP Users Integration that includes a change so that if a migration gets stuck, it can be restarted, continue and will finish up. The release version number is 2.0.3.

Josh,

That seemed to fix it but when the db upgrade script ran it seemed to do more records (~200) when it said there were 151 to do.

So, the progress bar ended up overwriting the NEXT button making it hard to click on, but a sliver remained, so it worked.

Thanks,

Paul
